COO Artie Minson Could Exit AOL, Patch Issues To Blame?

aol-coo-artie-minsonAOL Chief Operating Officer Arthur “Artie” Minson could be departing the company soon, we’re hearing, possibly over how the company has been handling hyperlocal news site Patch. A spokesperson declined to comment for this story, Minson hasn’t returned my call, and our sources say that it’s not a done deal. Minson was promoted to the COO job in June of last year as part of a larger reorganization, moving over from his three-year stint as CFO.?His official bio is basically a big list of positions that he’s held at either AOL or Time Warner (hey, remember AOL-Time Warner?) going back to 2004. In his current position, he’s been responsible for leading the company’s three business units ? the membership group, the brand group (which TechCrunch is a part of), and AOL Networks. One explanation we’ve heard for Minson’s departure is that AOL is trying to boost the numbers for Patch?by lumping in traffic and revenue from the Huffington Post’s local sites. Patch is still unprofitable and?missed its sales target in AOL’s most recent earnings report.?Minson was supposedly unwilling to go along with that plan, which is why he’s leaving. None of this has been officially confirmed. The departure of executives like Brad Garlinghouse from AOL spurred a concerned investor letter back in 2011. The letter also mentioned the departure of Michael Arrington and Heather Harde from TechCrunch. Then exactly one year ago, it?announced a few more departures, including CTO Alex Gounares. Whatever happens with Minson, other exec changes are also happening. AOL is also looking to bring in a new CEO for the content brands division, according to another report out today.

'Spider Sense' suit trades sight for touch

A student project has resulted in a suit that mimics Spider-Man's famous "spider sense," allowing the wearer to sense obstacles and other people without the benefit of sight. It still has a ways to go, though, so using it to fight crime is not advised.

Victor Mateevisti at the University of Illinois, Chicago decided to investigate whether something like an enhanced sense of one's environment can be created with off-the-shelf sensors and hardware. The answer is: Not quite yet, but we're getting there.

The suit consists of ultrasonic rangefinders placed at various attitudes that feed into a central processor. That processor sends signals to small mechanical arms that put pressure on the body in the general region of the object detected.

The approach is similar to that of the Tacit, a hand-worn "sonar for the blind" that translates distance into pressure, but the SpiderSense suit detects its environment in several directions at once.

So, for example, if a person were to approach someone wearing this suit from behind, the sensor would detect that person when they came in range and pressure would be applied to the user's back. If they came from the left, pressure would be applied on the left.

Experiments with a blindfolded test subject had mixed results. In some situations, such as a simple hallway or open area with pedestrians coming and going, the test subject could accurately detect the direction and distance of obstacles (and even hit them with cardboard throwing stars made for that purpose).

On the other hand, navigating the aisles of the library proved impractical: the narrow corridors and openings didn't produce intelligible information.

Mateevitsi told New Scientist that the goal isn't necessarily a whole suit. A limited version of the system could be used by a bicyclist to be better aware of traffic behind him, for instance.

The results and methodology of the project can be viewed in Mateevitsi's paper (PDF); The findings will also be presented next week at the Augmented Human conference in Stuttgart, Germany.

Indigo is a cloud-based, cross-platform personal assistant for Android and Windows Phone 8 (hands-on)

The idea of a personal assistant needs no introduction: you already know Siri, and those of you fortunate to own a Jelly Bean handset (or at least a hacked ICS one) have the privilege of using Google Now So there's very little we haven't seen here. And yet, we were inclined to take a look at Indigo, a new personal assistant for Android and Windows Phone 8 that launched yesterday, and will be available as a free download in the coming weeks. Meet us past the break to find out why.

5 Important Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Credit Union

choosing a credit union

Are you fed up with your current bank? Do you need an auto loan or?new bank account, but you don?t know where to go? Unless you live in a one-horse town, there is probably a bank on every corner, and if you are not too picky you might choose any random bank and complete an application.

However, not all financial institutions are created equal, and a bank is not your only option. Regardless of whether you are applying for a mortgage, a credit card or opening a savings account, consider the benefits of?choosing a credit union.

Membership for Local Credit Unions

There are misconceptions about credit unions, and if you?ve never had an account with one of these financial institutions, you may feel that you?re ineligible for membership. According to Jenn Cloud, the Young and Free Spokesperson for Vantage Credit Union, many believe that credit unions are an ?exclusive club that requires you to be a part of a union or work in a certain field.?

Yes,?local credit unions?have eligibility requirements, but qualifying for membership may be easier than you think. While a credit union membership may be open to people who work at a specific company or within a specific field, the financial institution may also extend an invitation to anyone who works, attends school or lives in the same area as the credit union. Additionally, membership may be open to you if a relative of yours is an existing member.

Benefits of Credit Unions

But, why choose a?credit union vs. a bank? These financial institutions achieve the same purpose. You can apply for loans, open accounts and obtain a credit card with both. However, there are clear benefits of credit unions.

Unlike a bank ? which is controlled by shareholders ? a credit union is owned by its members. With this said, all members have a say in how the credit union operates. As a not-for-profit organization, local credit unions exist to serve their members. The money a credit union earns from the interest they receive on loans and credit cards are not paid to outside shareholders. Thus, credit unions can afford to offer lower interest rates on mortgages, auto loans, personal loans and credit cards, as well as offer innovative services.

The question remains: How do you go about choosing a credit union?

Choosing a Credit Union: 5 Questions to Ask

Although credit unions share a common goal, they vary across the board. Perhaps you are eligible for membership at two or three credit unions and you can?t decide where to apply. In looking for the best credit unions, ask yourself these five questions.

#1. Can I qualify for membership?

It?s easy to check a local?credit union?s membership?requirements, as most credit unions include this information on their website. Or you can stop by a local credit union branch or call their customer service number to see if you are eligible for membership. A representative will ask you a series of questions to determine if you are eligible, such as:

  • Who is your employer and where?
  • What is your field of work?
  • Do you live in the same city as the credit union?
  • Which schools have you attended?

The requirements are specific, but not overly strict.?Eligibility requirements can vary. If you are unable to join a particular credit union, simply apply with another.

#2. How accessible are the automated teller machines (ATMs)?

Some credit unions are small and only have one branch. This is not a huge problem if you work or live near the branch. But if there is some distance between you and the branch, you might have to drive far to deposit your checks and withdraw cash. Some small credit unions are part of a network of ATMs, and you don?t need to visit the actual location to conduct simple transactions. Find out the locations of all?network ATMs?in your area. Decide whether these locations are convenient, and check whether there is a fee to access these machines.

#3. What are the current interest rates?

If you are applying for a mortgage or auto loan and you are thinking about using a credit union, contact multiple credit unions to compare rates. When compared to banks, credit unions typically have better rates.

Still, it pays to compare rates among different credit unions to ensure that you receive the lowest rate possible.Request a no-obligation quote, and based on your credit score, a representative can determine your interest rate.?Comparison shopping also works to your advantage if you?re opening a savings account or a certificate of deposit. Some?credit unions will even offer?interest rate matching?services on deposit or loan services ? so don?t be afraid to ask about this!

#4. Does the credit union offer any perks?

The best credit unions will offer a few incentives. This might include free overdraft protection, free checking, free financial workshops and discounts on entertainment. Some credit unions even allow payment holidays. For example,?Chartway Federal Credit Union?allows its members to skip their auto loan payment during the month of December. In addition, members can request a skip-payment option up to three times throughout their auto loan term.

#5. Does the credit union have online account management?

Big banks have plenty of resources, thus they?re able to offer their customers numerous online features. Because credit unions are smaller,?online banking?services are sometimes limited. Even so, many credit unions now offer online solutions to meet the needs of their customers.

When choosing a credit union, inquire about the availability of online services. Can you check your account online, pay your bill online and apply for additional services online? Likewise, consider whether the credit union has an app that lets you monitor your account from your mobile device.

Wrong Again, Bob! GOP Needs Latino Votes

"Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee came out explicitly this week against a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants currently in the United States, another sign of the tension between Democrats and Republicans on the issue."*

Bob Goodlatte, one of the most powerful Republicans in Congress, does not want to introduce, let alone discuss, making a path to citizenship in immigration reform. What other insulting words did he have to say to Latino votes, and hasn't he realized how important the Latino vote is? Cenk Uygur breaks down the disastrous immigration plan.

Tax Time: The Dos & Don'ts of "Extra" Cash

Tax RefundIf you clicked on this article, I assume it's fair to say that you are expecting or have already received a tax refund.? On the one hand, I wish to congratulate you heartily because nobody likes owing money at tax time.?

On the other hand, savvy friends, consider this a stern (but loving!) "tsk, tsk."? The reason?? If you're receiving a refund, you're having too much withheld from your paycheck and have essentially given Uncle Sam an interest-free year-long loan and while that's awfully nice of you, it's more than Sam would do for you, n'est-ce pas?? So, before you order up that new iPad, here are a couple savvy tax time "do's" and "don'ts" to help you get your money working better for you, not Uncle S.

Tax Refund Savvy: What to Do (and Don't Do) with Your Tax Refund

  • Immediate DO: Check with your Human Resources manager to find out how to have less withdrawn from your paycheck.? If you got the national average tax return of $3,000, that's almost $300 a month you could be investing and putting to good use!
  • If you have any debt, DO pay it off immediately with your refund.? With most credit cards charging 18% interest, carrying credit card debt from month to month is a savvy-free proposition, especially if you could have had the money to pay it off all year long.
  • If you don't have any debt, DO build up your nest egg.? Everyone should have 3-6 months of expenses lined up in a high-interest savings account for emergencies.
  • If you don't have debt, already have a decent nest egg (3-6 months of expenses is ideal), DO start investing in a moderate-risk mutual fund or an IRA. Once you have less deducted from your paycheck, assuming you are maxing out on your 401k contributions, put the extra money to work in your mutual fund or IRA.
  • If you absolutely MUST spend some of your tax refund, DON'T blow the whole wad. It's okay to splurge after you get that big check from Uncle S., but not more than 5-10% of your total amount.? Remember, that "extra" money isn't a windfall, it's money you earned over the past year and just lent out for free. Tsk, tsk!

Low-pitched song indicates fairy-wren size

Feb. 20, 2013 ? A male fairy-wren's low pitch song indicates body size, a new international study has shown. The study led by University of Melbourne researcher Dr Michelle Hall, is the first to show that the larger the male fairy wren, the lower the pitch of his song.

"This is the first time we have been able to show that song pitch indicates body size in song birds," said Dr Hall from the University's Department of Zoology.

The study, which began when Dr Hall was at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Germany, has been published February 20 in the journal PLOS ONE.

Reliable communication about body size between animals is particularly important when communicating with mates or rivals. For example the bigger the rival is, the more likely it is to win in a fight so a song pitch indicating a large size may deter rivals.

"Surprisingly, there is very little evidence that the pitch of calls indicates body size differences within species, except in frogs," she said.

"In birds in particular, there has been no evidence that the pitch of songs indicated the size of the singer until now."

The study involved measuring the leg length (a good indicator of overall body size) of 45 adult male purple-crowned fairy-wrens. It found there was a correlation between the lowest song pitches and male size.

"We found the bigger males sang certain song types at a lower pitch than smaller males," she said.

Purple-crowned fairy-wrens are creek-dwelling birds from northern Australia and, like their close relatives the blue wrens, males sing trill songs after the calls of certain predators, a context that seems to attract the attention of females.

Males have a repertoire of trill song variants, and it is the low-pitched variants that indicate the size of the singer.

Dr Hall showed that it may be the complexity of birdsong that has obscured the relationship between body size and song frequency in the past.

"Birds can have large repertoires of song types spanning a wide frequency range, and some birds even shift the pitch of their songs down in aggressive contexts," she said.

"Focusing on the lowest pitches that males were able to sing was the key to finding the correlation with body size."

NBC Sports Writer Smears Baptist Church with Tebow Ties

By Todd Starnes

The pastor of one of the nation?s most prominent Southern Baptist churches is calling on NBC to retract a column that labeled the congregation as being ?virulently anti-gay and anti-Semitic.?

FOLLOW TODD ON FACEBOOK FOR CULTURE WAR NEWS. CLICK HERE TO JOIN!

Rick Chandler, an NBC Sports ?Off the Bench? writer, smeared the historic First Baptist Church of Dallas and urged Tim Tebow to cancel an upcoming appearance at the church.

?Tim Tebow to speak at virulently anti-gay, anti-Semitic Dallas megachurch,? read the headline on Chandler?s column.

?That?s the church led by pastor Robert Jeffress, a virulently anti-gay and anti-Semitic evangelical Christian,? he wrote. ?It seems that lately Tim Tebow has been making more speaking appearances in church than he has quarterback appearances in NFL games.?

Jeffress said the accusations levied by Chandler were based on second and third-hand stories that were filled with inaccuracies.

?I would like NBC Sports to acknowledge that they made an error in their reporting and relied on secondary sources instead of doing their own reporting and fact-finding like any credible news organization ought to,? Jeffress told Fox News. ?

Jeffress denied that his 11,000-member church is anti-gay or anti-Semitic.

?Nothing could be further from the truth,? he told Fox News. ?We are a very pro-Israel church. To say that Jesus Christ is the only way for a person to be saved is not anti-Semitic.?

The New York Daily News also picked up on Tebow?s upcoming appearance at the church and also slammed the church.

?Tebow?s Hate Date: Tim to Talk at Gay Bash, Anti-Jew pastor?s church,? the headline screamed.

Jeffress said that kind of reporting is why Americans don?t trust journalists.

?This is another example of gross inaccuracies supported by the liberal press with no resemblance to truth whatsoever,? Jeffress said. ?This is a part of not just a liberal agenda ? but sloppy journalism.?

He said it?s clear the news organizations have no understanding of mainstream evangelical Christian beliefs.

?What I have said about homosexuality going against God?s standard for human sexuality ? and about Christ being the only provision for salvation ? these are not radical ideas,? he said. ?These have been a part of historic Christian faith for 2,000 years.?

But Jeffress ultimately believes the media was really looking for another chance to bash Tebow.

?I think the long knives have been out for Tim for some time,? he said. ?This is another way to try to attack him for his Christian beliefs. Most discerning people realize this was an ambush ? not of us so much ? but of Tim Tebow and the beliefs we hold dear.?

Ken Shepherd, managing editor of Newsbusters, defended Pastor Jeffress, while noting Chandler is entitled to his personal opinion of both the minister and Tebow.

?Jeffress is certainly controversial and outspoken on religious and political matters, but to tag him anti-gay or anti-Semite is unfair and unhelpful to the interests of any rational discussion about the religious beliefs that Jeffress holds,? he wrote.

A purchase on Google Play may leak your email address to developers

I use several email addresses for a variety of purposes. One for my Internet business, others for family matters, friends and online purchases. What I?m trying to do is limit the exposure of some email addresses on the Internet to avoid that they are being added to spam databases which would result in my inbox being flooded with spam messages.

According to one Android developer, a purchase on Google Play, Google?s virtual store for all things Android, reveals not only your email address but also your full name and information about your location to the developer.

If you bought the app on Google Play (even if you cancelled the order) I have your email address, your suburb, and in many instances your full name.

The core issue here is privacy, for obvious reason. First, you are not asked if you want to reveal those information to the developer or at the very least get to pick an email address and maybe an alias when there is no way around it. Second, you do not know that your information are revealed and for some users, it may explain the increase in spam they have received in recent time.

Even if most developers either do not know that those information are available or do not abuse them in any form, there will certainly be some developers who either sell the information to advertising agencies and marketers, or use them for email marketing purposes of their own.

Besides marketing, developers can also use the information to contact users who have left negative reviews on their sites, or harass them in other ways, for instance by signing them up for newsletters and other databases. The majority of developers won?t abuse the system, but since there are so many developers out there, the likelihood is high that some do.

At the very least, Google should inform users before they make a purchase. This can be done similarly to how app permissions are displayed before installation.

It needs to be noted that this is reported by a single Android developer right now. It is not clear why this has not come to light earlier.

Senator Marco Rubio's sip of water seen around the world

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - His words may or may not be long remembered, but Senator s swig lives on and on and on.

Across the Web, from Deadspin.com to The New Yorker, and on every cable news channel, the Florida senator's sip from a small bottle of water as he delivered the official Republican response to U.S. President Barack Obama's State of the Union address on Tuesday was the moment of the evening.

In politics, timing can be everything and Rubio experienced a dry mouth at probably the worst time imaginable, speaking to a live TV camera before an audience of millions.

So when the rising political star abruptly stopped in mid-speech to reach for a small Poland Spring bottle of water out of view and took a sip from it, the awkward incident took on a life of its own.

Twitter exploded with reaction. Even Donald Trump offered an opinion: "Next time Marco Rubio should drink his water from a glass as opposed to a bottle?would have much less negative impact."

Poland Spring saw a marketing opportunity, posting on Facebook a picture of a bottle of its water seated in front of a dressing room mirror.

"Reflecting on our cameo. What a night!" the company said.

The website Deadspin.com posted a slow-motion version of the incident and set it to music. On Facebook, someone created a page called "1,000,000 strong to keep Marco Rubio hydrated."

Rubio tried to make the best of it with self-deprecation. He tweeted a picture of the bottle that he grabbed and laughed off the incident in TV interviews.

"I figured I was better off just taking that water and taking the hit for it than being unable to pronounce my words at the end of it. It'd been a long day at work," he told Fox News' "Fox & Friends."

Still, the incident took some of the luster from what was supposed to be Rubio's big moment on the national stage, at a time when Republican voters are looking to the youthful Cuban-American as part of a new wave of party leaders and a potential presidential candidate in 2016.

Rubio, 41, was an active campaigner last year for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and was chosen by leaders of congressional Republicans to deliver the party's official response to Obama's State of the Union address.

It was a golden opportunity, and Rubio was picked because he is a solid conservative voice, has a youthful demeanor and, as a Cuban-American, is appealing to Hispanic voters who typically vote for Democrats.

Republicans thought he did just fine, in spite of the sip of water and the frequent wiping of sweat from his face. They did not think he had damaged his future prospects.

"My perception is Rubio did a good job on the substance and delivery, except for reaching for the water bottle. That's too bad, but if the guy's throat got dry, he probably had no choice," Republican strategist Charlie Black said. "I think overall, for people who had never seen Rubio before, they would've been impressed by what they saw."

Experts said it probably helped Rubio that he quickly made light of the incident and tried to put it behind him.

"The good news for Rubio, in a way, was that he was social-media savvy and he sent out a tweet," said Susan MacManus, a political science professor at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

MacManus teaches students who are interested in careers in politics and she said it was disconcerting to them that the swig of water was dominating the coverage. "It was funny. Levity is good in politics," but if the awkward moment comes to define Rubio, it is troubling, she said.

Republican strategist Ana Navarro said: "There is zero damage to Marco from the water bottle thing. If anything, it's had a silver lining. It extended the shelf life of the interest in the speech and kept us all talking around the water cooler about his speech."

The incident overshadowed what Rubio actually said. He described how he had been raised by middle-class immigrants from Cuba and said Obama's policies were hindering greater economic growth.

"So Mr. President, I don't oppose your plans because I want to protect the rich. I oppose your plans because I want to protect my neighbors," he said.

It was the substance of the speech, not the water, that was seized on by the White House, evidence that Democrats see Rubio as a potential future threat.

"I would say one thing, which is that while the messenger may have changed, the message we heard last night from the Republican speaker was entirely consistent with the policy ideas that Mitt Romney campaigned on last year that the American people did not support," White House spokesman Jay Carney said.

Favorite generation of video game consoles? - DVD Talk Forum

Re: Favorite generation of video game consoles?

Well the 5th gen is the only one where I have two consoles, and GoldenEye was one of my favorite games ever, so I'll say that one. 3rd and 4th will always have a special place I my heart, but the 7th is actually way up there too I think, especially when you consider just how much these consoles can do.

North Korea conducts third controversial nuke test

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) ? Defying U.N. warnings, North Korea on Tuesday conducted its third nuclear test in the remote, snowy northeast, taking a crucial step toward its goal of building a bomb small enough to be fitted on a missile capable of striking the United States.

North Korea said the atomic test was merely its "first response" to what it called U.S. threats, and said it will continue with unspecified "second and third measures of greater intensity" if Washington maintains its hostility.

The underground test, which set off powerful seismic waves, drew immediate condemnation from Washington, the U.N. and others. Even its only major ally, China, voiced opposition.

President Barack Obama, who was scheduled to give a State of the Union address later Tuesday, said nuclear tests "do not make North Korea more secure." Instead, North Korea has "increasingly isolated and impoverished its people through its ill-advised pursuit of weapons of mass destruction," he said in a statement.

North Korea claimed the device was smaller than in previous tests; Seoul said it likely produced a bigger explosion.

The test was a defiant response to U.N. orders to shut down atomic activity or face more sanctions and international isolation. It will likely draw more sanctions from the United States and other countries at a time when North Korea is trying to rebuild its moribund economy and expand its engagement with the outside world.

Several U.N. resolutions bar North Korea from conducting nuclear or missile tests because the U.N. Security Council considers Pyongyang a would-be proliferator of weapons of mass destruction and its nuclear testing a threat to international peace and stability. North Korea dismisses that as a double standard, and claims the right to build nuclear weapons as a defense against the United States, which has been seen as enemy No. 1 since the 1950-53 Korean War. The U.S. stations more than 28,000 troops in South Korea to protect its ally.

Tuesday's test is North Korea's first since young leader Kim Jong Un took power of a country long estranged from the West. The test will likely be portrayed in North Korea as a strong move to defend the nation against foreign aggression, particularly from the U.S.

"The test was conducted in a safe and perfect way on a high level, with the use of a smaller and light A-bomb, unlike the previous ones, yet with great explosive power," North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency said, confirming speculation that seismic activity near Kilju around midday was a nuclear test.

North Korea was punished by more U.N. sanctions after a December launch of a rocket that the U.N. and Washington called a cover for a banned missile test. Pyongyang said it was a peaceful, and successful, bid to send a satellite into space.

The timing of the test is significant. It came hours before Obama's speech and only days before the Saturday birthday of Kim Jong Un's father, late leader Kim Jong Il, whose memory North Korean propaganda has repeatedly linked to the country's nuclear ambitions.

This year also marks the 60th anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended the 1950-53 Korean War, and in late February South Korean President-elect Park Geun-hye will be inaugurated.

In Pyongyang, where it was snowing Tuesday, North Koreans gathered around televisions to watch a 3 p.m. TV broadcast announcing the nuclear test.

The test shows the world that North Korea is a "nuclear weapons state that no one can irritate," Kim Mun Chol, a 42-year-old Pyongyang citizen, told The Associated Press in the North Korean capital. "Now we have nothing to be afraid of in the world."

The National Intelligence Service in Seoul told lawmakers that North Korea may conduct an additional nuclear test and test-launch a ballistic missile in response to U.N. talks about imposing more sanctions, according to the office of South Korean lawmaker Jung Chung-rae, who attended the private meeting. Analysts have also previously speculated that Pyongyang might conduct multiple tests, possibly of plutonium and uranium devices.

North Korea is estimated to have enough weaponized plutonium for four to eight bombs, according to American nuclear scientist Siegfried Hecker.

It wasn't immediately clear to outside experts whether the device exploded Tuesday was small enough to fit on a missile, and whether it was fueled by plutonium or highly enriched uranium. A successful test would take North Korean scientists a step closer to building a nuclear warhead that can reach U.S. shores ?seen as the ultimate goal of North Korea's nuclear program.

In 2006, and 2009, North Korea is believed to have tested devices made of plutonium. But in 2010, Pyongyang revealed a program to enrich uranium, which would give the country a second source of bomb-making materials ? a worrying development for the U.S. and its allies.

"This latest test and any further nuclear testing could provide North Korean scientists with additional information for nuclear warhead designs small enough to fit on top of its ballistic missiles," Daryl Kimball and Greg Thielmann wrote on the private Arms Control Association's blog. "However, it is likely that additional testing would be needed for North Korea to field either a plutonium or enriched uranium weapon."

Uranium would be a worry because plutonium facilities are large and produce detectable radiation, making it easier for outsiders to find and monitor. However, uranium centrifuges can be hidden from satellites, drones and nuclear inspectors in caves, tunnels and other hard-to-reach places. Highly enriched uranium also is easier than plutonium to engineer into a weapon.

Monitoring stations in South Korea detected an earthquake in the North with a magnitude of 4.9 and the South's Defense Ministry said that corresponds to an estimated explosive yield of 6-7 kilotons.

The yields of the North's 2006 and 2009 tests were estimated at 1 kiloton and 2 to 6 kilotons, respectively, spokesman Kim Min-seok said. By comparison, U.S. nuclear bombs that flattened Nagasaki and Hiroshima during World War II were estimated at 13 kilotons and 22 kilotons, respectively, Kim said.

The test is a product of North Korea's military-first, or songun, policy, and shows Kim Jong Un is running the country much as his father did, said Daniel Pinkston of the International Crisis Group think tank.

The decision to push ahead with a test will be a challenge to the U.N. Security Council, which recently punished Pyongyang for launching the December long-range rocket. In condemning that launch and imposing more sanctions on Pyongyang, the council had demanded a stop to future launches and ordered North Korea to respect a ban on nuclear activity ? or face "significant action" by the U.N.

U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon condemned the test in a statement. Japanese officials said they expected the Security Council to meet later to take up the nuclear test.

China expressed firm opposition to the test but called for a calm response by all sides.

The other part of a credible North Korean nuclear deterrent is its missile program. While it has capable short and medium-range missiles, it has struggled in tests of technology for long-range missiles needed to carry bombs to the United States, although it did launch the satellite in December.

North Korea isn't close to having a nuclear bomb it can use on the United States or its allies. Instead, Hecker said in a posting on Stanford University's website, "it wants to hold U.S. interests at risk of a nuclear attack to deter us from regime change and to create international leverage and diplomatic maneuvering room."

France, Britain promise punishment in horsemeat scandal

PARIS/LONDON (Reuters) - The French and British governments promised on Saturday to punish those found responsible for selling horsemeat in beef products at the heart of a growing scandal that started in Britain but is quickly spreading to France.

French Consumer Affairs Minister Benoit Hamon said an investigation had found that the horsemeat had originated in Romania, although there were links with French, Dutch and Cypriot firms and a factory in Luxembourg.

British environment minister Owen Paterson said more cases of contaminated food could emerge as British retailers conducted tests for horsemeat on processed beef products. The scandal threatens to affect consumer confidence in Europe's giant food industry, with pressure rising for greater checks.

The British unit of frozen foods group Findus began a recall this week of its beef lasagne from retailers on advice from its French supplier, Comigel, over concerns that some packs contained high levels of horsemeat.

Findus France said it too had recalled lasagne and two other products after discovering that they included horsemeat from Romania rather than beef from France as it had thought.

Hamon said an EU-wide alert had been sent out and that it was not yet clear whether there had been an intentional fraud or the meat had been sold as beef by accident.

"I can assure you that, whether it's a question of negligence or direct responsibility, there will be sanctions," Hamon said on iTele television.

LEGAL COMPLAINT

Findus France Director General Matthieu Lambeaux said in a statement the company would file a legal complaint on Monday.

"We thought we had certified French beef in our products. But in reality, we were supplied with Romanian horsemeat. We have been deceived," Lambeaux said.

Hamon said a Luxembourg factory had been supplied by the French firm Poujol, which had bought the meat frozen from a Cypriot trader, who in turn sub-contracted the order to a Dutch trader supplied by a Romanian abattoir.

However, Findus's supplier Comigel, a frozen foods producer based in eastern France, told a newspaper it had bought the meat from another French company, supplied from a Romanian abattoir.

Romanian authorities said they would punish any violations if the reports were confirmed.

"The agriculture ministry and food safety authority will try to identify as soon as possible whether the (meat) comes from Romania. If legislation was broken, they will punish such practices that damage the image of the entire industry," Romania's agriculture ministry said.

In Britain Findus said it believed the contamination was deliberate.

"The early results from Findus UK's internal investigation strongly suggests that the horsemeat contamination in beef lasagne was not accidental," it said.

Findus's product recall was followed in Britain by supermarket chain Aldi, which withdrew two frozen beef products supplied by Comigel after they tested positive for horsemeat.

Paterson summoned Britain's leading food retailers and representatives of food processors to an emergency meeting at his office in London on Saturday to discuss the crisis.

He said participants were determined to get to the bottom of a scandal which he said was either caused by "gross incompetence or what I suspect is an international criminal conspiracy".

Britain's government is under pressure to appear on top of the scandal, which comes less than a month after supermarket chain Tesco and fast food outlet Burger King found horsemeat in beef burgers from an Irish supplier.

Britons generally do not eat horsemeat, regarding its consumption as a quirk of French appetites. However, the meat has also fallen out of favour with consumers in France.

PFT: McGinest: Someone needs to talk to Gronk

New York Yankees v Baltimore Orioles - Game TwoGetty Images

I?ve noticed various complaints and lamentations on Twitter today regarding the fact that, for the first Sunday since Labor Day weekend, there will be no NFL action.

I even resisted responding to a tweet from the official Steelers account that a ?Sunday without football? is ?[n]ot quite the same? by pointing out that the Steelers have had since December 30 to get used to it, because I (possibly) am better than that.

But here?s one thing to keep in mind, if you don?t like the fact that football is gone for the year.? If you?re among those who don?t want the regular season to expand, you?re sort of wanting to have it both ways.

Indeed, if the regular season had grown by two weeks, the Pro Bowl would have been played today.? And the Super Bowl would be happening next week, on President?s Day weekend.? Even with a two-game preseason, the NFL?s interest in expanding the season by two weeks would still entail starting the 256-game grind (actually, 288) on the Thursday after Labor Day.? Several years ago, the NFL realized that Labor Day weekend should be avoided, since TV viewership on the last unofficial weekend of summer is ridiculously low.

Thus, with an 18-game season, the real games would start when they currently do, and the postseason would stretch two weeks deeper into February.? It?s one of the reasons NASCAR made plans two years ago to move the Daytona 500 away from the day on which the Super Bowl would fall.

It still could happen, given that executive V.P. of football operations Ray Anderson recently said that the 18-game season remains on the table.? But the players are strongly opposed to the possibility, regardless of the potential financial gains.

Until it happens, if it ever does, we?ll have to find a way to get through the Sundays without football.? But apart from watching other sports (like my distant second favorite, hockey), there?s still plenty of football to consume.? Our traffic grows dramatically in the offseason, as fans search for any and all information about free agents and contracts and salary-cap compliance and the draft and offseason workouts and the inevitable arrests and everything else that happens before training camp opens.

We?ll be here, every step of the way, every day of the offseason.? So even though there will be no games, there will still be plenty of football until the Ravens host whichever team they?ll be playing on Thursday, September 5.

Heart-healthy habits to adopt today

It may seem counterintuitive, but many studies have demonstrated that drinking red wine may be good for the heart. The research varies with regard to what about wine, when enjoyed in moderation (two glasses a day for men and one for women), makes it healthy, but one study determined the heart benefits can be linked to both the alcohol and the antioxidants found in red grapes. The American Heart Association agrees, and says ??people who don?t have health conditions that can be aggravated by drinking alcohol ? like liver disease, pancreatitis, or heart failure ? may enjoy alcohol in moderation.? If taking up wine is not something you can or want to do, a good alternative is drinking grape juice made from red Concord grapes.

A great habit not to break in the New Year is having regular sex. According to WebMD, ?having sex could lower your stress and your blood pressure.? Results from a Scottish study found that people who engaged in sex responded better to stress than those who abstained. Less stress equals lower blood pressure. Other studies have found similar results with regard to sex and stress relief. Bottom line. Do it for your heart.

Something to try: Acupuncture has also shown promise as a heart-healthy habit. Find an acupuncturist near you and ask for a consultation.

Another interesting way to ensure your heart health is to make sure you are maintaining your oral health. Studies have shown people who have gum disease (periodontal disease) are more likely to have coronary artery disease. Other studies have found that bacteria from the mouth may get into the blood and contribute to blocked arteries. These bacteria might also trigger inflammation in the blood vessels. While the jury is still out on a definite connection, it's a good idea to play it safe and see your dentist.

A study presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions in 2006 showed, for someone with mild to moderate heart failure, dancing was a heart-healthy habit to take seriously. The study found those who ?took up waltzing breathed better, exercised longer, and generally felt better. Dancing boosted heart health just as much as exercise.??

Chemicals linked to obesity in black children - Mother Nature Network

Black children with high levels of hormone-altering chemicals used in some shampoos and lotions are more likely to be obese, according to research published today.

?

The study by New York University scientists is the second to link phthalates to obesity in children but the first to use a large sample of children and look for racial disparities.

?

Black children have much higher levels of the chemicals in their bodies than children of other races, and for every tripling of certain compounds, they were 22 percent more likely to be obese, according to data from 2,884 children aged 6 to 19. No links to obesity were found in white or Hispanic children.

?

?The takeaway is we need to consider environmental exposures when looking at the obesity problem,? said Leonardo Trasande, a professor at New York University School of Medicine and lead author of the study. ?Environmental chemicals may contribute independently of diet and exercise.?

?

Phthalates are a large family of chemicals with varied uses. The phthalates associated with black children?s obesity were the kind commonly added to personal care products to make fragrances last longer. Other phthalates are used to make vinyl and can be found in food packaging, medical devices and flooring.

?

Trasande and colleagues checked for a variety of phthalates and only found a link to the kinds used in personal care products.

?

Both Trasande and other researchers were quick to point out that this doesn?t mean phthalates cause obesity.

?

?It?s a big study and nationally representative, which is good,? said Joe Braun, an epidemiology professor at Brown University who was not involved with the research. ?But since they measure phthalates levels in urine and obesity at the same time, it?s a chicken and egg problem. Do phthalates cause obesity or are obese children more exposed?? It?s unclear, he said, when they were exposed relative to when they became obese.

?

Kathryn St. John, a senior director of product communications at The American Chemistry Council, which represents chemical manufacturers, said no conclusions can be drawn from this study about whether a significant increase in childhood obesity can be linked to phthalate exposure.

?

?Attempts to link our national obesity problem to minute exposures to chemicals found in common, everyday products are a distraction from efforts to address this important national health issue,? St. John said.

?

Previous studies have linked phthalates to hormone disruption ? including hormones responsible for fat tissue and development of the brain and reproductive system. Trasande said it?s plausible ? though not proven by this study ? that phthalates could contribute to obesity by messing with receptors that metabolize lipids and carbohydrates.

?

One previous study linked phthalates to obesity in children. High phthalate concentrations were associated with increased body mass and waist size in Hispanic and black children aged 6 to 8 in New York City. Phthalates also were linked to adult obesity in a 2007 study.

?

In the new study, it is unclear why there was only a link for black children, but it could be due to their higher concentrations of the chemicals. For the personal care product-type phthalates, black children had levels 81 percent higher than white children, 45 percent higher than Mexican American children and 4 percent higher than other Hispanic children.

?

"One possibility is that different racial/ethnic groups use phthalate-containing shampoos and lotions differently, or use products containing different [phthalate] mixes," says the study, which was published online in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.

?

Researchers didn?t see any differences by age groups. And, while the black children had higher levels of phthalates as a whole, the association with obesity happened at relatively low levels of exposure, Trasande said. The study used data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention?s 2008 nationwide testing of chemicals in people?s bodies.

?

It?s possible black children are simply more exposed, or they metabolize the chemicals differently, said Emily Barrett, a professor at the University of Rochester who studies exposure to environmental chemicals.

Many factors ? including nutrition and stress ? could alter how different children metabolize chemicals, said Jennifer Adibi, an epidemiology professor at the University of California, San Francisco.

?

In a study released late last year by Trasande and colleagues, another hormone disrupting chemical ? bisphenol A ? was linked to obesity in only white children.

?

Trasande controlled for diet, television watching, gender and age in the phthalate study. Pinning chemicals to weight gain is a challenge, but the study forces some new thinking about obesity, he said.

?

The next research step is to look at phthalate exposures from fetus to childhood to try to tease out whether the chemicals are contributing to obesity, he said.

?

Adibi said the findings are ?interesting and scary.? While it?s not enough evidence to spur policy changes, she hopes it will reframe the conversations about risks to disadvantaged communities.

?

?This is another reason to increase awareness among low income, African American and Hispanic populations and let them know they?re at an increased risk of exposure to these chemicals and that we?re seeing these associations (with obesity),? Adibi said.

Why Some AT&T Users Didn't Receive Yesterday's Emergency Alert

If you're anywhere near the East Coast, yesterday you might have received an emergency storm alert on your phone telling you it's time to to break into mass hysteria. Or maybe you didn't! While it was nice to know that someone cared for those that got it, the emergency alert was hitting people's phones pretty sporadically and without any real rhyme or reason as to which were getting the message—or so it seemed. 5 key lessons from a content marketing juggernaut

Imagine a company blog that posts huge piles of data, insults its readers liberally and peppers in a few F-bombs to boot.

A recipe for disaster? You?d sure think so, but the content marketing strategy of OK Cupid has won the free dating website near universal praise.

Through its over-the-top blog posts, the site went from surviving on a nearly nonexistant marketing budget to a user base of over 3.5 million users and a $50 million acquisition by another online dating giant, Match.com.

Though I?ve never used OkCupid, its blog ? blending humor and statistics with huge huge viral appeal ? is a must-read in my RSS reader.

Here are five lessons any marketer can learn from OkCupid?s content and apply to your brand?s content marketing strategy.

1. Put your data to work

Most of OkCupid?s blog posts are data-driven, backed up by numbers from their own base of users.

In The Best Questions for a First Date, OkCupid helps daters out with a list of innocuous questions you can ask that will lead you to the answer of the questions you really want to ask.

For example, if you want to find out if your date is a liberal or a conservative, ask ?Do you prefer the people in your life to be simple or complex?? According to the user data at OkCupid, liberals prefer complexity while conservatives are much more likely to prefer simplicity.

OkCupid-SimplicityComplexity

The takeaway:? Use data you?ve collected about your business, customers or niche to craft content that will interest your average customer. If you don?t have data on hand or don?t feel comfortable using customer data, commission a survey or study or administer quizzes and polls through social media.?Most industries won?t have data that?s as ?sexy? as OkCupid?s, but you can still work with what you have to answer questions or provide a helpful resource.

2. Think big picture(s)

The key to creating data-driven content is to use statistics in a way that makes them jump off the page. OkCupid stands out from the crowd by using photos and graphs to explain their points in a clear and concise manner.

The graphs in particular are key, because they take otherwise boring numbers and give them visual appeal. This chart, for example, shows how men lie about their height on OkCupid to the tune of about 2 inches on average.

OkCupid-male-height-chart

When your posts are primarily data, it?s imperative to find a way to display the data in a way that keeps the reader ? well ? reading.

This isn?t an easy feat ? comments from OkCupid?s founder on this Quora thread show how much work goes into each post.

It?s easy to look at an OkTrends post, with all its simple graphs and casual writing style and think someone just threw it together, but it probably had 50 serious revisions.

The takeaway: Stats are great, but they?ll put the average person to sleep if they aren?t used correctly. When you use data, take the time to make sure you fully understand it and help your readers do the same with your visualizations.

And as the internet becomes more and more visual (witness the?popularity of Pinterest and infographics), think visual in all your content. Develop a visual content strategy to take advantage of this shift.

3. Be less boring

Let?s look at the OkCupid post Death, Freedom and Cold Winters as a great example of avoiding the ordinary.

This post offers state-by-state answers to taboo questions including ?If you knew for sure you would not get caught, would you commit murder for any reason??

OkCupid-murder-map
It?s risky, but that?s exactly why it works. The edginess of the content is what makes the post interesting enough to warrant attention and pique the curiosity of the reader.

The takeaway: Take risks with your content to avoid the trap of falling into the ?just another blog? category. The most memorable sites are those producing content that is unlike anyone else?s.

Got corporate overlords who aren?t keen on risks? Get buy-in to try a slightly off-kilter concept, then measure the results. If it brings you more traffic and conversions, you?ll be able to argue for more out-there content.

4. Have a brand voice

Can you imagine typing this ? about your own customers ? on your company blog?

?The basic currency of the Internet is human ignorance, and, frankly, our database holds a strong cash position!?

Or this, from the ?Death, Freedom and Cold Winters? post referenced above:

?Despite the fact that it?s located in Minnesota, Minnesota actually seems like a nice place to live? On the other hand, North Dakotans are strange: they?re apparently more for the equality of life, but also more for killing. These men are nihilists.?

Though the author ran the risk of alienating users in both states, he went for the joke anyway. Love it or hate it, OkCupid?s blog has a recognizable voice ? one that includes plenty of snarky humor and salty language.

Will that approach work for most brands? Probably not. Humor is a great way to give content a voice, but it certainly isn?t the only way. Your brand?s voice can be quirky, helpful, conversational, etc. Your job as a content producer is to find a way to make your writing recognizable to anyone who reads.

The takeaway: Just because you have a boring business doesn?t mean you have to produce dry content. The best content online isn?t written like reference material. Show people that you?re more than just someone who punches keys on a keyboard by giving your content a consistent voice and personality.

5. Don?t go with the flow

OkCupid certainly wasn?t the first dating site on the block. What if the site had taken its cues from an ?established? dating site like eHarmony?

One of eHarmony?s latest posts, Dating Do: Eye Contact, is not only boring but condescending. (Who on earth thinks looking at the floor while talking to a date will win any brownie points?) Although it uses data (from scientific studies, not user profiles), the information doesn?t tell us about ourselves or say anything new. It misses the gotta-share-it nerve that OkCupid?s posts strike.

The moral? Even though eHarmony might look more professional and boasts lots of posts written by people with ?doctor? in the title, it can?t compete with OkCupid?s irresistible data-driven content.

The takeaway: Jeff Bezos and Amazon didn?t become icons by following the same business plan as the Wal-Marts of the world. Do something different. Get your brand outside the status quo. Own your niche by being the one that others strive to follow.
