Snowstorm takes aim at Plains, Midwest

(AP) ? An early spring snowstorm delayed flights at Denver International Airport and closed several roads Saturday as it moved eastward, dumping more than a foot of snow in some places.

The snow started falling around midnight in northeast Colorado and then moved into northwest Kansas and southwest Nebraska.

Ten to 15 inches of snowfall had fallen by late Saturday morning north of Interstate 70 in northwest Kansas and northeast Colorado, with another 3 inches expected in the area, said Jerry Killingsworth, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service. The interstate had been shut down Saturday from Denver to Colby, Kan., because of poor visibility.

"It's a mess here," said Killingsworth, who is based in Goodland, Kan., which had received 14 inches. "Heavy, wet snow, tree limbs down."

As the system moved eastward, it threatened to inconvenience fans attending the NCAA men's college basketball tournament in Kansas City.

Pamela Murray, an NWS meteorologist in Pleasant Hill, Mo., said Kansas City and western Missouri would see light showers and drizzle before the precipitation switched over to snow Saturday afternoon. The heaviest snowfall was expected overnight, with overall accumulations in eastern Kansas and central Missouri mostly ranging from 5 to 9 inches.

Dan Gavitt, the vice president of the NCAA men's basketball championships, said teams and officials already are onsite and that no game delays are anticipated.

"This region routinely has winter snow and has the appropriate equipment and procedures to manage these winter conditions," Gavitt said in written statement. "We encourage fans planning to attend games to pay attention to the weather, use good judgment and follow any directions from local authorities regarding travel and weather."

Denver International Airport spokesman Heath Montgomery said Saturday that some arriving flights have been delayed by more than two hours, but only about two dozen flights have been canceled.

Meanwhile, the Colorado Avalanche Information Center said up to a foot of new snow in the mountains could create dangerous avalanche conditions.

The system will move into Illinois and Indiana overnight and into Sunday. Central Illinois could see a band of heavy snow with accumulations of 6 to 9 inches, while areas north of Peoria could get 4 to 6 inches. Forecasters expect a mixture of snow and rain south of I-70.

Farther south, tornadoes are possible in Louisiana and Mississippi as the storm system moves east, while strong winds and low humidity levels could lead to forest fires and wildfires in parts of New Mexico and west Texas.

Sharp will miss deadline for $60M Qualcomm investment, is getting an extension instead

If you recall, Sharp hit the jackpot back in December, when Qualcomm promised to invest around $120 million in the troubled company in exchange for a five percent stake. Sharp already received the first half of that windfall at the tail end of 2012, whereas the remaining $60 million wasn't going to distributed until "sufficient progress has been made." If that last bit sounds vague, Sharp was actually being held to some clear terms: it had until March 29th to finalize specifications for new power-saving screens that will be used in both tablets and smartphones, and which Qualcomm will help produce. Sharp also needed to generate an operating profit of 100 billion yen ($1.05 billion) in the second half of its fiscal year, though a company spokesperson confirmed that's not the reason this payment has been stalled. Fortunately, like those of us who ever started a paper too late, Sharp is getting an extension, with a new deadline of June 30th. In the meantime, though, its problems are festering: a deal for Foxconn to buy a 9.9 percent stake appears to have fallen through.

This 4-week summer study abroad program takes place in vibrant Shanghai, China. The learning is a blend of classroom instruction, cultural trips and activities, and visits to multinational corporations based in Shanghai. Participants enjoy comfortable?accommodations?in shared hotel rooms, frequent social activities and excursions, and full-time staff support. International business courses are taught by Jacksonville University faculty, and culture and language courses are taught by local faculty at host university Shanghai International Studies University.

Students have the chance to interact with local Chinese students at the host university, allowing an exchange of Mandarin/Shanghainese and English. Many trips are included both within Shanghai as well as to other areas of cultural and historic interest such as Beijing and The Great Wall. International business courses make visits to interact with business executives of Chinese-based multinational corporations. The final project consists of a presentation given to Chinese business executives after learning about international business in the context of Chinese culture and history in the global marketplace.

Jeff Palm, Executive Director of CISabroad stated, ?We are excited to be able to offer students a short-term summer program in such a vibrant environment ? both culturally and economically ? as Shanghai. Apple Store thieves attack with bear spray

News

Vancouver police are investigating a brazen robbery at an Apple Store Tuesday in which three male suspects allegedly sprayed 40 people with a chemical mix designed to ward off bears as they swiped an undetermined amount of Apple laptops, iPads and iPods.

According to the?National Post?in Canada, police are still looking for the suspects, who fled by car and dumped some of the items they swiped before doing so. A handful of the people hit at the Oakridge Mall with the cayenne pepper-based spray were treated by paramedics,?according to the National Post.

Theft of Apple devices has become a serious concern for device owners and law enforcement. An armed robbery of an Apple Store in Paris on New Year?s Eve involved more than?US$1 million in stolen goods.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg in December?pointed to thefts of iPhones and iPads?as being the main reason crime numbers have inched up in the Big Apple.

2012 was marked by a wide variety of ugly thefts of Apple products, including at stores, on the streets and at airports. There was even a report of thief?stealing an iPhone from a baby.
