Users experience brief Facebook outage

Twitter

By Rosa Golijan

Many Facebook users appear to have experienced a brief outage or have encountered particularly slow-loading pages, both of which are extremely rare for the social network.

DownForEveryoneOrJustMe.com

A quick check of?DownForEveryoneOrJustMe,?a website which can be used to check the availability of other sites, showed that there were definitely widespread issues with Facebook during a 15 or 20 minute time period on Thursday. From past experience, I realize that?DownForEveryoneOrJustMe?isn't always perfectly accurate when it comes to large sites which rely on clusters of servers?? but it can still be used to confirm that some people did have issues.

Several of our staff members ? including yours truly?? struggled to load any Facebook pages, and Twitter is full of posts reporting similar issues.

We have reached out to Facebook in an attempt to figure out what happened and were told that "some users briefly experienced issues loading the site," by a Facebook spokesperson. She added that "the issues have now been resolved, and [Facebook is] back to 100%."

Great, now we can get back to the hilarious Twitter responses to the brief Facebook outage:

The Correlation Between Workplace Safety And Profit Generation ...

Workplace injuries, according to studies, were responsible for the hospitalization or emergency medical treatment of over 40 million American workers. This is a staggering number when one considers the efforts most companies have put into maintaining a safe workplace. The past few years have seen a rise in the number of companies legally mandated to pay financial restitution to victims of workplace-related injuries. Workplace safety and profitability make strange bedfellows, but in business parlance they are bedfellows nonetheless.

Every company, especially those involved in industrial manufacturing, is constantly looking at ways to continuously improve their products and processes. These companies realize the congruence between high profits and effective and efficient means in creating products. Unfortunately, too many companies get caught up in drive for higher profits and tend to allow workplace safety to become an afterthought.

One cannot help but be dumbfounded by the staggering costs of operating a sizeable manufacturing facility in America. The effect of workplace injuries is crippling in more ways than one ? it also cripples the budget of a company and their productivity. By being detail-oriented and focused on preventative measures, a lot of these injuries can be precluded. It is, after all, possible to prevent many workplace injuries. The safety and spick-and-span condition of a workplace is probably the best possible way a company can prevent injuries from occurring, though the factors in avoiding injurious accidents are not limited to this. Workers are also culpable for their own safety at the end of the day.

For medical facilities and insurance companies, workplace injuries can be quite a burden to deal with. With companies paying more and more on employee health care premiums, one of the more prevalent ways of recouping costs hitherto spent would be to increase the prices of commodities and services. This places the burden of expense on the consumer, and allows companies to ignore the root cause of their workplace injuries. Veteran economists such as ourselves are ruing the current business paradigm wherein business organizations are more concerned about currying the favor of shareholders rather than remaining in favor with the rank and file by caring for their health and safety.

It is quite fascinating and in a way disconcerting that there are more jobs than ever before, especially industrial jobs, outsourced to foreign countries. There are actually a few reasons why this is so even up to now. By inexpensively acquiring labor from mostly third world countries, American companies are thus able to significantly cut down on the costs of operation, costing a mere percentage of what they would normally be paying for domestic assistance. The foreign governments, on the other hand, are all too happy to invest, and as a result, giddily accommodate the interest invested by corporate America. Invariably, workplace safety is compromised, thus making such a deal appear Faustian in nature.

In order to generate greater profit over a long term period of time, big companies need a paradigm shift in terms of workplace safety and their workers? overall health. With the number of foreign countries offering inexpensive labor and a lax labor code still numerous, American companies still outsource their jobs overseas. Nonetheless, a confluence of safety and profit is possible for American business entities. Through directed education campaigns and preemptive planning, workplace injuries can be reduced in a significant way. Remember: a safe worker is a happy worker, and a happy worker is a productive worker.

However, like its older distant cousins ? laptops, DVD players and even plasma TVs ? it will possibly display videos very well. With its crisp, glossy screen, you?ll be able to expect excessive from this system and you won?t be disappointed. In some respects, it even beats current gaming consoles with its features and capacity to reinforce gaming experience. Gaming console developers might be cursing that extra horsepower and that further huge multitouch display screen that Apple threw into their pill PC.

It might be a computer replacement. ? Sooner or later, we could see iPad-like units changing actual computers. As ?raw? as iPad is now ? uncooked, meaning having the superb and numerous apps and capabilities it has now ? it already reveals great promise for end users. It somewhat gives us a glimpse of personal computer systems 5, 6 10 years ahead. Maybe even less.

Despite all its glory, iPad is nowhere near to changing ?actual? computers simply yet. It might probably?t do as a lot as laptops and desktops can however it might probably definitely run as a winner towards netbooks and other smaller devices. It will possibly even beat e-studying units, portable DVD gamers, and even plasma TV. Realizing Apple, we all know that some nice things are in store for iPad 2.0.

So what?s iPad? Let?s simply say it is the primary gadget ever to ship on its promise while taking present applied sciences to much higher heights. It might take some time earlier than Apple unveils its predecessors, however iPad is certainly the future of personal computing.

Sex life of worm hides a protein with links to ALS

A protein that helps worm sperm to fertilise an egg may be related to a human protein that plays a role in inherited forms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

ALS, often called Lou Gehrig's disease in the US, paralyses muscle cells that control movement. There is no cure or treatment, and no conclusive evidence of what causes it. Those with the condition almost always die within a few years.

The new discovery, by Michael Miller at the University of Alabama in Birmingham and colleagues at Baylor University in Texas, has highlighted a protein that may be a culprit. The protein, called MSP, was first found in male Caenorhabditis elegans nematode worms 11 years ago. It is secreted by sperm cells to prepare eggs for fertilisation.

In 2004, a similar protein was discovered in a large human family with the inherited form of ALS. In humans it appears to be involved in signalling between cells, especially muscle cells.

Miller's team has now found that if worms and fruit flies have a mutation that makes them produce less MSP, they suffer mitochondrial defects like those in people with ALS. This suggests that a lack of the protein might help trigger the disease. Every person with ALS studied so far also has less of the protein than healthy people, adds Miller.

"The science is certainly interesting," says Jeffrey Rothstein, director of the Robert Packard Center for the Study of ALS at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. "But I don't know that there is a therapy in there somewhere." He says that although the protein may be involved in inherited forms of ALS, it is not yet clear that it is also relevant to the more common non-familial forms of the condition.

Politicians, union hail RBS CEO's bonus refusal (AP)

LONDON ? Britain's leaders, politicians and union leaders on Monday welcomed the decision by the chief executive of nationalized Royal Bank of Scotland to refuse, under huge media pressure, a million-pound ($1.6 billion) bonus.

The bank, which is 82 percent-owned by taxpayers, announced Sunday that Stephen Hester would not accept a bonus of 3.6 million shares after calls to do so grew from politicians, labor unions and the media.

The bonus would have been on top of Hester's annual salary of 1.2 million pounds for leading the restructuring of RBS, which the government spent 45 billion pounds to rescue and nationalize during the global credit crunch.

Prime Minister David Cameron urged the bank to show restraint in its bonus payments to Hester's senior colleagues in the coming weeks, and suggested it do a better job to explain how executive pay is linked to performance.

"They have got to have proper regard in terms of restraint when they have had so much money from the taxpayer and they have made so many mistakes in the past," Cameron told reporters in Brussels, where he was attending a summit of European leaders.

Cameron's comments came after Foreign Secretary William Hague said Hester's decision was "sensible and welcome," while David Fleming, national officer of the Unite union, called it "better late than never."

The opposition Labour Party had been planning to force a vote in the House of Commons on a motion demanding that Hester be stripped of the bonus.

"I don't think this can be just a one-off episode, because if we don't deal with this systematically, if we don't deal with the issue of bankers' bonuses in a proper way, this kind of thing is just going to re-occur," said Labour Party leader Ed Miliband.

He said banks "need real change in the boardroom and new rules and real change from the government to, say, tax the bankers' bonuses until we see the change in behavior that we need."

The pressure on Hester to forego his bonus, however, raised doubts on the bank's longer-term ability to retain high-level executives.

"The ongoing politicization of contractually owed bonuses can only serve to increase the risk that management will ultimately decide to leave, severely hampering the prospects of a further recovery," said Gary Goodwood, analyst at Shore Capital Stockbrokers.

"This is one of a number of reasons why we think it is still too early to take a positive stance on Royal Bank of Scotland shares."

Bruce Packard at Seymour Pierce took a contrary view, saying any move to "more clearly align incentives with actual share price performance ? RBS shares fell by a third in the last year ? ought to be taken as good news for owners of the business."

The government will only recover its investment in RBS if the company's stock rises to around 50 pence. On Monday, it was down 2.4 percent at 27 pence.
