At least one intelligent response to the USPSTF recommendation ...

Dan Zenka, a prostate cancer patient and a Senior VP with the Prostate Cancer Foundation, appears to have published one of the more intelligent responses to the USPSTF recommendation on PSA screening since Monday?s announcement. Have a look at his blog post.

We live in a delusional world, and cognitive dissonance is alive and well when it comes to things like the value of diagnosing disorders like prostate cancer (and breast cancer) early enough to cure them (if they need to be cured).

This morning there is an OpEd in The Philadelphia Inquirer from Dr. Virginia Moyer, the chairwoman of the USPSTF (under the heading ?Prostate cancer test does more harm than good?). Dr. Moyer reiterates the USPSTF?s position on the lack of value of PSA screening for the majority of American males. Interestingly, and simultaneously, Dr. Michael LeFevre (the vice-chairman of the USPSTF panel) is quoted as follows in a HealthDay article that appears on the Philly.com web site:

Some may say that by rating the test a ?D? we?re taking away the possibility of an informed decision, but we don?t want that to be the case, ? This decision does not preclude a man choosing to be screened.

Are you confused yet!

The dual, fundamental problem about the early diagnosis of prostate cancer that no one is really addressing is that:

  • The potential benefits of early detection (curative treatment that extends life) only really accrue to a relatively small subset of the male population who need early diagnosis, whereas
  • The potential harms of excessive biopsies and over-treatment (with no extension of life) are currently accruing to a much larger group of men who will never know whether they really needed treatment or not.

In addition, there is a third group of men that we can now diagnose (apparently) early and treat (apparently appropriately) with curative intent, but whose cancer ? at the time of diagnosis ? has, in fact, already progressed to an incurable stage, so these men have recurrent disease that continues to progress from micrometastatic to metastatic to prostate cancer-specific mortality over the next 5 to 20 years.

The debate about the value of the PSA test largely ignores these realities. Addressing these realities requires much better and much more specific tests that can differentiate between the 20+ types of prostate cancer that we are now able to identify, along with the knowledge about which of these 20+ types of prostate cancer are the ones that really need aggressive and early treatment when identified in specific individuals.

The other equally critical issue is a much more public acceptance by newly diagnosed patients ? and by the leadership of the prostate cancer treatment community ? that active monitoring (i.e., ?active surveillance?; and not ?watchful waiting?, which is a very different animal) is an entirely appropriate form of management for a very high proportion of men currently being diagnosed with low- and very low-risk prostate cancer (specifically including those with a life expectancy of 15 years or less).

Of course your Sitemaster is living in intellectual dreamland ? a place where logical behavior is the norm and cognitive dissonance bears a strong resemblance to an unidentified flying object.

Are you Physically Active? No Time Like the Present to Start ...

With the weather getting warmer and Memorial Day weekend ? the unofficial start to summer ? soon upon us, what better time to make a commitment to physical fitness? How fitting then, that May is both National Physical Fitness and Sport Month and Exercise is Medicine Month! BlazeSports invites you to join us in making a commitment to physical activity this month and throughout the summer.

All individuals need health care and a good health regimen to stay well and actively participate in the community. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are many health implications for being overweight. Among the increased risks are: greater risk of hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, some cancers, high cholesterol, osteoarthritis, asthma, and other respiratory problems. For an individual with a disability, understanding how to prevent illness and manage these secondary health conditions is an important part of healthy living.

Physical activity at all ages reduces risks of heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Physically active children, including children with disabilities, are more likely to thrive academically and socially. Physically active children also learn how to incorporate safe and healthy activities into their lives. For adults, physical activity can reduce the risks of secondary health conditions and pain as well as depression.

In 2008 the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) published the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans to provide information and guidance on the types and amounts of physical activity that provide substantial health benefits for all Americans aged 6 years and older. The report recognizes that one of the most important steps any individual can take to achieve better health is becoming physically active. If you aren?t familiar with the guidelines, we encourage you to use this month?s designation as an impetus to get in the game!

Key Guidelines for Individuals with Disabilities:
? Adults with disabilities, who are able to, should get at least 150 minutes per week (2 hours and 30 minutes) of moderate intensity, or 75 minutes (1 hour and 15 minutes) per week of vigorous intensity aerobic activity, or an equivalent combination of moderate and vigorous intensity aerobic activity. Aerobic activity should be performed in episodes of at least 10 minutes, and preferably, it should be spread throughout the week.
? Adults with disabilities, who are able to, should also do muscle strengthening activities of moderate or high intensity that involve all major muscle groups on 2 or more days per week as these activities provide additional health benefits.
? Children and adolescents should do 60 minutes (1 hour) or more of physical activity daily. Most of the 60 or more minutes a day should be either moderate or vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity, and should include vigorous intensity physical activity at least 3 days a week. Children and adolescents should include muscle strengthening physical activity and bone strengthening physical activity at least 3 days a week.
? When individuals with disabilities are not able to meet the above Guidelines, they should engage in regular physical activity according to their abilities and should avoid inactivity.
? All individuals should consult their healthcare provider about the amounts and types of physical activity that are
appropriate for their abilities.

Thioridazine, successfully kills cancer stem cells in the human while avoiding the toxic side-effects of conventional cancer treatments

Hamilton, ON (May 24, 2012) -- A team of scientists at McMaster University has discovered a drug, thioridazine, successfully kills cancer stem cells in the human while avoiding the toxic side-effects of conventional cancer treatments.

"The unusual aspect of our finding is the way this human-ready drug actually kills cancer stem cells; by changing them into cells that are non-cancerous," said Mick Bhatia, the principal investigator for the study and scientific director of McMaster's Stem Cell and Cancer Research Institute in the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine.

Unlike chemotherapy and radiation, thioridazine appears to have no effect on normal stem cells.

The research, published today in the science journal CELL, holds the promise of a new strategy and discovery pipeline for the development of anticancer drugs in the treatment of various cancers. The research team has identified another dozen drugs that have good potential for the same response.

For 15 years, some researchers have believed stem cells are the source of many cancers. In 1997, Canadian researchers first identified cancer stem cells in certain types of leukemia. Cancer stem cells have since been identified in blood, breast, brain, lung, gastrointestinal, prostate and ovarian cancer.

To test more than a dozen different compounds, McMaster researchers pioneered a fully automated robotic system to identify several drugs, including thioridazine.

"Now we can test thousands of compounds, eventually defining a candidate drug that has little effect on normal stem cells but kills the cells that start the tumor," said Bhatia.

The next step is to test thioridazine in clinical trials, focusing on patients with acute myeloid leukemia whose disease has relapsed after chemotherapy. Bhatia wants to find out if the drug can put their cancer into remission, and by targeting the root of the cancer (cancer stem cells) prevent the cancer from coming back. Researchers at McMaster have already designed how these trials would be done.

Bhatia's team found thioridazine works through the dopamine receptor on the surface of the cancer cells in both leukemia and breast cancer patients. This means it may be possible to use it as a biomarker that would allow early detection and treatment of breast cancer and early signs of leukemia progression, he said.

The research team's next step is to investigate the effectiveness of the drug in other types of cancer. In addition, the team will explore several drugs identified along with thioridazine. In the future, thousands of other compounds will be analyzed with McMaster robotic stem cell screening system in partnership with collaborations that include academic groups as well as industry.

"The goal for all of the partners is the same to find unique drugs to change the way we tackle and treat cancer," he said.

The research was supported by grants from the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR), the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute (CCSRI) and the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development and Innovation (MEDI)'s Ontario Consortium of Regenerating inducing Therapeutics (OCRiT).

"This large scale research endeavor would have been impossible without the active support and vision of the Canadian and Ontario governments along with private donors," said Bhatia.

There Are Certain Tools That Are Necessary For Home Improvement ...

When you?re planning any kind of home improvement project, one thing that you can?t overlook is having the tools you need. You may need a large number of tools or only a few, but make sure you figure out what?s necessary so you can move forward as efficiently as possible. A wide variety of home improvement jobs will take a wide variety of tools to finish those projects.

When moving heavy objects, it is helpful to use a device that does that, and most people don?t think about that type of tool. The back will eventually wear out by moving too many things, such as heavy furniture, and that is why a dolly should be used, anytime something heavy needs to be moved. When you are able to do it, moving your furniture by putting it on wheels, will be better for the furniture and also for your back, that probably already hurts. If you have to move things up and down stairs, it?s worth getting a stair trolley, which makes this process much easier. Other than get a stair trolley, the best solution to carrying stuff up and down stairs, is to hire someone to do it for you. A wheelbarrow is one basic tool you need if you plan on doing yard work or planting a garden. Heavy items are just put into the wheelbarrow, and instead of carrying them, they are just rolled. Sometimes it can be quite a chore keeping your tools in order when you are in the middle of a job in your home. Some of the less cumbersome equipment like screwdrivers, screws, and things like nails can be some of the most easily misplaced. One great piece of equipment is a tool belt; this can keep your smaller items close at hand when you are working on a project. You may choose a tool apron which will provide pockets for keeping smaller things in. This will present a calmer atmosphere when you are working on a repair job because you will know where everything is that you will need and can bypass the hide and seek concept. A tool belt or apron is a wise investment for little expense and will add organization to all of your home improvement projects.

When you need tools for your projects around the house, you can find them at many locations. If your local hardware store doesn?t have what you need, then the home improvement store is another place to try.

Until you get a drill, you might not realize how nice they are to have. While many people automatically assume they need power tools for everything nowadays, in some cases a hand drill might be simpler and more efficient. These can be used safely without worrying about cords or batteries. Of course, in many situations a power drill will make things easier, and it?s good to have one for such cases. Cordless drills were a nice invention for convenience, but they don?t always have enough power, in which case, you will need a plug-in drill. You should have a drill that is reversible, and has more than one speed. Many home improvement projects need the right type of drill, so having more than one type will make your life easier.

After reading these general recommendations, you should have a good idea as to what tools you will need and how to organize them. Before your project begins, the research should be complete along with gathering the tools you will utilize. You can complete all of this, even on a budget. Just make sure you properly prepare before beginning to make home improvements. Having the most efficient tools can reduce the amount of time it takes and give you more impressive results.

by WorkFromHome on May 17, 2012

It happens to every website owner at some point in their business. Sales begin to drop and there is a slowdown in visits to your site. In fact, this problem may happen right from the start or after several years. Whatever the case, it will happen.

What your site needs is fresh content. You need to appeal to a broad range of customers, and you must adopt a writing style that will encourage people to make a purchase and return to your site. If you use article marketing to promote your site, you may need to re-evaluate your articles to make sure they are conveying the right ?feel? for your site.

The following 11 tips will help anyone master copywriting skills:

  1. Speak Through Your Customer: When you are composing your content imagine that you are the customer. What information are you looking for? What problem do you have that you are trying to resolve with this product? What is going to catch your eye and make you stop and read? Even though you may have very relevant information to share, you must be able to share it in a way that will make the customer feel that you are addressing the problems that they are trying to correct.
  2. Perspective: Sometimes it just takes changing the perspective of a sentence or two to create a different feel for your site. For example the sentence: ?We have twenty years of experience in the industry? could be changed to read ?You will feel comfortable working with a company that has excelled in this industry for twenty years.? Both sentences convey that you have twenty years? experience, but the second sentence reassures the customer that you are good at what you do or have a quality product.
  3. Aggressive vs. Passive: When you review your content, try replacing passive verbs with action verbs. While you do not want to become too pushy, you do not want the customer to feel that they have other options besides using your product or service.
  4. Become Friendlier: You should write like you speak. When you create content that has a friendly feel, instead of an authoritative or marketing tone, you will draw more readers. When a reader believes you are speaking directly to them, they respond in a positive manner.
  5. Write For The Internet: Time is always of the essence. When someone is seeking information on the Internet they have a tendency to skim the page looking for key information. Keep your paragraphs and sentences short. Break up content with headers or lists.
  6. Express Yourself: Do not write like a journalist, you are a business owner. People do not want to hear an objective view of the product; they want to know how you feel about the product and its benefits.
  7. Involve The Client: When you are writing articles or content, involve your potential clients by placing questions into the text. Asking them if they have experienced a specific thing encourages them to keep reading because they relate to the event. Have you ever watched a commercial that starts off with ?Do you suffer from??? This is exactly what the company is trying to do, make a connection with potential clients.
  8. Speak Naturally: When you are creating content, you need to ?speak? to the average person. Try to tone down technical terms unless very relevant, and try to reduce using words that may have a questionable definition. While using eloquent words may make the text sound magnificent, if the reader does not understand, you will lose a sale.
  9. Contractions: Contrary to what you were taught in school, using contractions is not improper in business writing. Using ?isn?t? instead of ?is not? gives your writing a more personal feel, and allows the reader to feel like they are interacting with a human and not a computer screen.
  10. Drop The Fluff: Read your content out-loud. How does it sound? Are you stumbling over long sentences or descriptions? Do you find yourself losing interest in the content? The truth is, if this is happening to you, it is happening to your reader. Go through your content and remove excess words. Remember rule #5: Write for the Internet. Keep your content to the point and you will develop a following.
  11. Include A Call To Action: Many people simply forget to include in their articles a call to action from the potential client. There is absolutely nothing wrong with requesting your readers to make a purchase or contact you for further information. You are selling a product or service, and the proper response for the free information that you just provided is for them to make a purchase. Many people wrongly believe that they must provide this free information without requesting a reply. They simply hope their content is enough to encourage a sale. Don?t rely on luck, place your call to action in your content and make the reader feel that ?now is the time to act.?

Could Ron Paul really have an impact on the GOP convention?

The Ron Paul campaign issued a memo outlining its strategy to secure 'the greatest possible impact' on the GOP convention. But its influence may be more symbolic than practical.

One day after announcing that the Texas libertarian will stop campaigning in states that have yet to hold primaries, Paul officials on Tuesday issued a memo outlining their strategy for the GOP convention in Tampa.

What?s the point of this? ?Maximizing our resources to ensure the greatest possible impact,? writes Jesse Benton, Paul?s chief strategist.

The Paul people will continue to try and pick up additional delegates at state conventions between now and the national confab in August, notes Benton. He claims that in the end the campaign will have several hundred Paul delegates, combined with several hundred delegates who personally are Paul supporters but are bound to Mitt Romney or one of the withdrawn GOP candidates.

The strategy document admits the obvious fact that Romney, not Paul, is going to be the nominee. But it holds out hope that Paul will be strong enough to influence the party platform.

?Our campaign is presently working to get several items up for consideration, including monetary policy reform, prohibitions on indefinite detention, and Internet freedom,? writes Benton.

What?s going to come of this? Is Paul really going to be a power at the convention?

Well, it?s certainly possible that he?ll get a platform plank calling for an audit of the Federal Reserve, or some other restriction on the Fed?s power. In recent years the GOP as a whole has been moving towards his Fed-critical position. It?s also possible that the convention will approve some sort of vague call for Web freedom. But a prohibition on indefinite detention? That is unlikely to pass muster, given that GOP voters generally are more hawkish on security issues than Paul.

?My best guess? Ron Paul pushes for votes on a few platform issues, and settles for platform committee losses on most of them but gets one or two minor victories, with something about the Fed probably the most likely,? wrote political blogger Jonathan Bernstein Monday in a Washington Post opinion piece.

The other thing Paul appears to be after is comity. In recent weeks his supporters have caused trouble at some state conventions as they push for advantage ? in Arizona, for instance, they booed Mitt Romney?s son Josh.

?By sending a large, respectful, and professional delegation to Tampa, we will show the party and the country that not only is our movement growing and here to stay, but that the future belongs to us,? writes strategist Benton.

However, as far as the GOP is concerned, the immediate future belongs to Romney. And the presumptive nominee will be exercising tight control over convention proceedings, as most presumptive nominees do. Will he allow Paul a little room to maneuver? That?s not clear.

It?s true that Romney and Paul have long seemed to get along, personally. But Paul is not offering Romney an endorsement, and he?s not urging his followers to toe the Romney line.

?If Romney wants to win the Paul vote, it seems, it won?t be good enough to put an audit-the-Fed plank in the Republican Party platform. He?d have to actually embrace and campaign on Paul?s issues, which could, in case it needs to be said, be a tricky proposition where the mass of the electorate is concerned,? writes political correspondent Molly Ball of The Atlantic Tuesday.

Weekend warriors: Daniel Straus takes tournament and Michael Chiesa scores upset

The MMA world continued to turn as you were off celebrating Mother's Day, so here's a quick rundown of what you need to know from the weekend.

As you can see from the video highlights, at Bellator Daniel Straus took the featherweight tournament final in a unanimous decision over Marlon Sandro. With that win, Straus will get to vie for the Bellator featherweight belt, which is currently held by Pat Curran. Patricky Freire will fight for it next.

Bellator was also marred by controversy as Waachiim Spiritwolf was winning his bout with Marius Zaromskis. However, Spiritwolf sustained a cut too severe to go on. For if the stoppage was justified, let's turn to veteran MMA journalist Jim Genia:

Tough break for Waachim Spiritwolf on that cut-stoppage, as he was wrecking Marius Zaromskis.? However, in no way, shape or form do I question that stoppage.? Dr. Sherry Wulkan was the one who waved the bout off, and she's been a ringside physician for more MMA bouts than 99.9% of the world has even?read about on the Internet.

Marcin Held won with a quick heel hook, and Marcus Galvao took a decision to earn a spot in the bantamweight tournament finals.

Quarterfinals were underway at set of "The Ultimate Fighter." Before the bouts, Dana White broke the news about Dominick Cruz's torn ACL to both teams before confirming that Cruz will stay on to coach for the rest of the season.

In the first quarterfinal, James Vick pressured Joe Proctor and avoided his submissions to take the two-round decision. Michael Chiesa moved on to the semifinals by scoring a TKO over Justin Lawrence in the third round. Lawrence was considered the favorite coming into the show, so Chiesa's win was an upset.

This Friday, Team Cruz's Vinc Pichel will fight Team Faber's Chris Saunders and a bout between teammates, as Team Faber's Al Iaquinta faces Andy Ogle.

HTC Rezound gets yet another Ice Cream Sandwich leak

Rezound

This should be old hat by now -- an ICS ROM has leaked out for the HTC Rezound. Just like the last leak, and the one before that, and the one before that, you need to either be S-Off or completely stock to load it, and this go 'round it brings new radios, and (you won't like this part) takes away the hidden dialer menu. That means if you've been using the Rezound on T-Mobile or AT&T, you'll want to stay far away from this leak, and likely the official update when it comes around. If you're rockin' the Rezound and wanna give it a look, hit the source links.

802.11-2012 WiFi freshens up spec with 3.7GHz bands, mesh networking

802.11 abgnxywtfbbq

It's hard to believe that 802.11 WiFi has only had three major revisions since it was started up 15 years ago. The IEEE must be equally surprised, as it's introducing a new 802.11-2012 standard that unites 10 technologies from various amended WiFi versions under one big tent. Among the picks are new support for 3.65 and 3.7GHz bands, to avoid clashing with 2.4GHz or 5GHz networks, as well as better support for direct linking, faster cellular hand-offs, in-car networks, roaming and mesh networking. You can pay $5 to have a peek at the 2012 WiFi spec today, although we'd brace for a significant wait before smartphones and routers ship with the new 802.11 format -- we know how long it can take for a WiFi standard to become a practical reality.

Chris Christie: 'Not Looking to be Loved'

Jewel Samao/AFP/Getty Images

WASHINGTON, D.C. - New Jersey Governor Chris Christie says his record in the Garden State is evidence that divided government doesn't have to mean gridlock, when leaders make the right "tough choices."

At a biannual dinner of Washington's libertarian Cato Institute Friday night, Christie told the crowd it was the duty of lawmakers to tell the truth about the nation's economic problems, or risk lengthening the fiscal fallout.

"When you're looking for love in this job, that's when deficits get run up," Christie said. "When you're looking for love in this job, it's because you can't say no to anything because someone somewhere won't love you if you do."

Christie said he was "not looking to be loved" in his state, recounting his administration's cuts to veterans' programs, education, and public employee benefits; examples of so called "third-rails" in politics. The Republican called the slashed budgets "common sense reforms, but tough ones."

"They said this was going to be impossible to do but we did it," he continued, "And we did it because we went out to the public and we told them why it was so important."

Christie boasted his budget plans eventually drew the support of his democratic-controlled state legislature, including its leadership.

"Don't tell me the American people are not ready to hear the truth. They know our government's out of control, they know our debt and our deficits are out of control. And don't confuse them liking the solution with accepting it."

Christie said when presented with the facts, voters "know in their heart" to accept the right solution.

According to Christie, his administration is set to return $132 billion in budget savings over 30 years, while delivering the first income tax break for New Jersey residents in over a decade.

Friday's event dovetails with speculation that Christie could enter the presidential race as a potential running mate for the presumptive Republican nominee, Mitt Romney.

For months, the Republican governor had denied calls to enter the GOP primaries, from supporters hoping to draw on his reputation as an outspoken and frank personality.

Christie repeatedly assured speculators he intended to fulfill the rest of his term, set to end in 2014. But in the last few weeks he's confessed he was open to the VP slot; most recently on Monday he told a New Jersey high school class that Romney "might be able to convince me," to share a ticket. Romney, Christie continued, is a "convincing guy."

The governor officially endorsed Romney in October and has campaigned with him across multiple states. Christie did not mention the upcoming election during his speech, and only commented on President Obama briefly.

"I remember Barack Obama talking about the lack of hope and optimism around the country in 2008," he said. "The environment I found myself in, in 2009, was not significantly different. Although he and I find the solutions to that problem in entirely different ways."

The Cato Institute is a think tank focused on individual liberties and free-market economics. The organization's gala gathering that night was to award a Chinese activist, Mao Yushi, with their Milton Friedman Prize for his work advocating a Western-style economy in Beijing.

While the governor's keynote address stayed predominantly on national issues, he did venture into broad foreign policy spurts during his roughly 40 minutes behind the podium. Christie said domestic "political sideshows" threatened to deteriorate America's standing abroad.

"There's no better way to prescribe other societies around the world to become more democratic and more market oriented than to show that our democracy, and our markets, work better than any other system," he said.

This week was the hardest photo contest to judge yet. I'm pleased to say that almost every single entry was pulled out and considered for the winner. I don't know if it was the subject, or random luck, or just that you guys are so damn good with your cameras, but the quality of this weeks entries just floored us. Have a look through the contest thread and see for yourself. We tried to pull a few out that deserve a special nod (see those after the break), but each and every entry was special. The best part?
