Chef Jeff Dining Review: Daily Eats On South Howard In Tampa ...

    Daily Eats Restaurant?
    Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner
    901 South Howard Avenue / Tampa 33606
    (813) 868-3335 / Website: www.dailyeatstampa.com?

Being hungry in South Tampa usually leads to something good.? Being hungry for home cooking led me to Daily Eats on South Howard.

My server, Betsy, immediately made me a friend and, at my request, shared her favorite dishes. ?The recommended bowl of Fiesta Mac and Cheese ($6 small, $11 large?as in feed the army) I ordered was their ?small? portion. There was plenty for a lunch or a shared appetizer.

Fiesta Mac and Cheese includes cheddar and jalapeno Jack cheeses, corn, cilantro, salsa and a confetti of colorful tortilla chips topping the bowl. The pasta shells are like little cups that carry the broth-like spicy cheese sauce to your lips. The sweet corn that pops up in a bite every so often cools the heat from the jalapeno cheese.

Betsy recommended the Potato Chip Crusted Turkey Burger ($9) with sweet potato fries. I enjoyed the crispy, crunchy crust of the burger and the fact that it was dense but still much lighter than a burger of red meat. The bun was marshmallow soft and when I added the accompanying thin slice of dill pickle, I had a Chik-Fil-A flashback!? What you won?t get from the famous chicken sandwich place with a drive-thru is the country remoulade dipping sauce. I skipped the dipping and asked for a straw. The rich, lightly spiced sauce was creamy heaven.

As if I wasn?t getting my fill of jazzed up home cooking already, the sweet potato fries were as good as promised. The hot and crispy planks were topped with a bit of salt, cinnamon, and a drizzle of honey. They were delicious and it was like eating? salted fries and a sweet dessert in one serving.

Other items on the menu that caught my attention included jalapeno grit bites as an appetizer, late night favorite chili cheese fries, and the Mega Melt for when I?m as hungry as a high school linebacker. This sandwich includes two grilled cheeses, a burger, and saut?ed peppers, onions, and mushrooms. There are plenty of other burger combinations as well as one of my favorite comfort foods, the open-faced turkey sandwich.

Daily Eats is part of the Ciccio family of restaurant that are famous for their meals served as a bowl. This casual South Howard standout is decorated in chrome and tile to create the feel of a 1950?s diner serves a large selection of the bowl-fare, too. The Shredder Bowls include brown rice, shredded lettuce and toppings that can include NY Strip, fish, BBQ, Thai, burger and even gyro meat.

Breakfast is served all day on the weekends and until 11am and at dinner on weekdays. The ?Egg-citing? omelets and the ?Egg-ceptional? sandwiches? set the tone for a line up of egg dishes to satisfy any craving.

I?ll be back one morning for the breakfast bowl that includes Crunchy Cinnamon French Toast, chopped and layered with scrambled eggs and topped with a vanilla maple syrup. Add cup of coffee and the morning paper for the perfect way to start the day.? For me, that meal will be with Donna across the table with her eggs, grits, pancakes and applewood bacon. That?s the ?Gigante? and is enough to share. We will be perusing the menu and discussing what to order next time we visit!

Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas: The Unexpected Duet

Demi Lovato is apparently not one to hold grudges.

The singer - who opens up about her battles with cutting and depression in the latest Self - may have once dated Joe Jonas, but that didn't stop her from inviting his brother on stage with her for a concert in Los Angeles this week.

Nick Jonas took fans by total surprise when he walked out to play guitar while Lovato sang the lyrics to "Catch Me" and "Don't Forget." Those in attendance said Nick even mouthed "I love you" when he walked off stage. AWWWW!

British PM British Prime Minister Pledges To Pull Out Troops By 2014

On a surprise visit to Afghanistan, the British prime minister has repeated a pledge that British combat troops will be withdrawn from the country by the end of 2014.

David Cameron held talks with British and Afghan officials in the southern province of Helmand during a previously unannounced trip on July 18.

After visiting soldiers at a base in Lashkar Gah, Helmand's regional capital, and at smaller forward base in Nad Ali, Cameron said he believed the handover of security duties from foreign to local forces was progressing well.

Britain has around 9,500 troops in Afghanistan.

Its contingent is second in size only to U.S. troop strength among Western forces in Afghanistan.

Britain plans to pull 500 troops out by December but has not given a timetable for others to leave.

NATO plans to turn over responsibility for security to Afghan forces by the end of 2014.

Mechanisms that allow embryonic stem cells to become any cell in the human body identified

ScienceDaily (July 18, 2012) ? New research at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem sheds light on pluripotency -- the ability of embryonic stem cells to renew themselves indefinitely and to differentiate into all types of mature cells. Solving this problem, which is a major challenge in modern biology, could expedite the use of embryonic stem cells in cell therapy and regenerative medicine.

If scientists can replicate the mechanisms that make pluripotency possible, they could create cells in the laboratory which could be implanted in humans to cure diseases characterized by cell death, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, diabetes and other degenerative diseases.

To shed light on these processes, researchers in the lab of Dr. Eran Meshorer, in the Department of Genetics at the Hebrew University's Alexander Silberman Institute of Life Sciences, are combining molecular, microscopic and genomic approaches. Meshorer's team is focusing on epigenetic pathways -- which cause biological changes without a corresponding change in the DNA sequence -- that are specific to embryonic stem cells.

The molecular basis for epigenetic mechanisms is chromatin, which is comprised of a cell's DNA and structural and regulatory proteins. In groundbreaking research performed by Shai Melcer, a PhD student in the Meshorer lab, the mechanisms which support an "open" chromatin conformation in embryonic stem cells were examined. The researchers found that chromatin is less condensed in embryonic stem cells, allowing them the flexibility or "functional plasticity" to turn into any kind of cell.

A distinct pattern of chemical modifications of chromatin structural proteins (referred to as the acetylation and methylation of histones) enables a looser chromatin configuration in embryonic stem cells. During the early stages of differentiation, this pattern changes to facilitate chromatin compaction.

But even more interestingly, the authors found that a nuclear lamina protein, lamin A, is also a part of the secret. In all differentiated cell types, lamin A binds compacted domains of chromatin and anchors them to the cell's nuclear envelope. Lamin A is absent from embryonic stem cells and this may enable the freer, more dynamic chromatin state in the cell nucleus. The authors believe that chromatin plasticity is tantamount to functional plasticity since chromatin is made up of DNA that includes all genes and codes for all proteins in any living cell. Understanding the mechanisms that regulate chromatin function will enable intelligent manipulations of embryonic stem cells in the future.

"If we can apply this new understanding about the mechanisms that give embryonic stem cells their plasticity, then we can increase or decrease the dynamics of the proteins that bind DNA and thereby increase or decrease the cells' differentiation potential," concludes Dr. Meshorer. "This could expedite the use of embryonic stem cells in cell therapy and regenerative medicine, by enabling the creation of cells in the laboratory which could be implanted in humans to cure diseases characterized by cell death, such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, diabetes and other degenerative diseases."

Pentagon sending aircraft carrier to Mideast early

(AP) ? The Pentagon is sending an aircraft carrier to the Middle East several months early to make sure at least two carriers will constantly be present in the troubled region.

There are two carriers in the area now, but one was scheduled to leave before its replacement arrived to fill that gap, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has approved sending by late summer the USS John C. Stennis strike group, which also includes the Aegis guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay and some 5,500 sailors.

The extra presence was approved late last week on a request by Gen. James Mattis, commander of U.S. Central Command, Pentagon press Secretary George Little said Monday.

Questioned about whether the deployment is a response to problems with Iran or perhaps the violence in Syria, he declined to be specific. Little said the need comes from a "wide range of security issues" in the region.

"This is not about any one particular country or any one particular threat," he said.

The USS John C..Stennis will have to accelerate its training and re-equipping of the ship, because it just left the area in December.

After that last deployment, Iran's army chief Gen. Ataollah Salehi in January warned the U.S. warship not to return to the Gulf, but its replacement, the carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, entered the Gulf without incident later in January.

Although U.S. warships have had a presence in the region for decades, the deployment schedule change comes during an escalating showdown between Iran and the West over the Islamic Republic's nuclear program.

The Pentagon also recently doubled the number of minesweepers in the region, giving the U.S. greater flexibility to counter any Iranian effort to mine the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf.

The strait is routinely patrolled by Iranian and U.S. warships. Iran has repeatedly threatened to close the strategic waterway, which is the transit route for about a fifth of the world's oil supply, in retaliation for increased Western-led sanctions.

Another ship, the USS Ponce, has also been sent. The amphibious transport dock was recently retrofitted to become what is known as an afloat forward staging base.

Feds to reroute SF Bay ships to protect whales

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Scientists studying the carcass of a 47-foot fin whale that washed up on a beach in the Point Reyes National Seashore last month found the creature's spine and ribs severed, likely from the propeller of one of the huge cargo ships that sail those waters.

There have been many victims of such accidents in recent years as migrating blue, fin and humpback whales have been lured close to California's shore by plentiful krill, the shrimp-like organisms they eat. All three species are endangered.

Now, after a two-year effort spurred by the uptick in accidents, federal maritime officials have approved a plan to protect whales in and around San Francisco Bay. It includes rerouting shipping traffic and establishing better ways to track whale locations.

The changes crafted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, shipping industry representatives, whale researchers and the Coast Guard will likely take effect next year, after a final review by the United Nations International Maritime Organization.

"In 2010 it really struck home when a female blue whale carrying a calf was found dead on the beach," said Maria Brown, NOAA's superintendent for the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. "And blue whales' numbers are so small ? to lose a female and a new whale coming into the population really sent home the message that we needed to look at the whale strike issue."

The shipping industry worked with federal authorities to establish new cargo lanes in one of the world's busiest ports.

"Nobody wants to hit a whale, just like anybody driving down the highway doesn't want to hit anything either," said John Berge, vice president of the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association, who worked on the plan. "We want to do whatever can be done to mitigate the risk, but do it based on good science and good management strategies as opposed to saying, 'Let's just try this and see if it works.'"

The plan includes establishing a real-time whale monitoring network that would use trained sailors aboard commercial vessels to report when and where they see whales. Once sighted, a warning would be sent to other ship captains, giving them the option to slow down or take a different route.

Captains now must rely on historical data on whale locations. That means ships may slow down unnecessarily in certain area, delaying delivery of goods.

Though voluntary, industry groups like the shipping association and the Chamber of Shipping America, which also took part in the study, believe shippers will support the concept because it could save them money.

"(The) cost of additional training of the bridge crew pales in comparison to the additional cost associated with lost time if you take ships that normally travel at 20 knots and slow them down to 10 knots over a 70 nautical mile vessel traffic lane," said Kathy Metcalf, director of maritime affairs for the chamber.

If successful in San Francisco, the reporting network could become mandatory worldwide through the U.N.'s IMO. That's a goal of those involved in drafting the plan.

"The ships themselves are the most ideal whale sighting platforms to use, and are the lynchpin to the success of this program," said John Calambokidis, an Olympia, Wash.-based scientist who has studied ship strikes off the West Coast for decades and who participated in the effort.

There are believed to be about 2,000 blue whales in the northeast Pacific, and about 10,000 worldwide. The largest animals on Earth, blue whales can grow up to 90 feet long, still a fraction of the size of cargo ships that can stretch 1,200 feet. There also are about 2,000 fin whales in the northeast Pacific, and about 2,500 humpbacks.

While fin and humpback whales have seen gains in population since the 1990s, the number of blues has declined or remained flat.

How many whales die from collisions each year isn't known because most accidents go undocumented and whales that are hit often sink. Whale researchers use population models that factor a species' reproductive rate and its natural mortality to come up with an estimate of how many are likely dying.

In 2010 there were just five confirmed fatal collisions recorded in the area outside San Francisco Bay. But the number of actual strikes of all whale species is likely 10 times higher, Calambokidis said.

PRBO Conservation Science, an environmental research group, conducts annual surveys of whales and other marine life in the sanctuaries around San Francisco Bay. Research director Jaime Jahncke said the number of blue and others whales is four to five times greater than in 2004, increasing the likelihood of ship strikes.

These surveys and other data were used to help map the new shipping lanes by showing vessel owners and federal officials where the whale grounds and shipping lanes were overlapping.

There currently are three shipping lanes coming in and out of San Francisco Bay.

The westbound shipping lane currently ends at the relatively shallow continental shelf, where ships disperse. The new westbound lane would extend three miles past the continental shelf, and contain traffic to a defined area over the whale feeding grounds. The new northbound lane would also be extended miles beyond the shelf, keeping vessels sailing in a straight line for a longer time, rather than allowing them to disperse where the whales congregate.

PFT: Ex-FBI boss now will investigate Saints

    Joey LoganoAP

Chris Burkey used to go out scouting for blockers and tacklers.

Now, he?s got eyes out for a good jack-man or tire carrier.

The former Dolphins scout during the Nick Saban era has turned his attention to NASCAR, where he works for Hendrick Motorsports recruiting potential pit crew members.

?When you look at an athlete, it?s all about body movement and body mechanics, and that?s what we do in college sports,?? said Burkey, who also coached football at Wingate, Tennessee Tech, and North Carolina. ?We try to find those fundamentals with those guys and try to fine-tune those to make them better players.?

According to a story in the Boston Globe,?the athletic requirements Burkey?s looking for are remarkably similar. Get low, use leverage, strength, explosiveness. That?s universal whether trying to get off the line of scrimmage or haul a tire over a wall. He even holds combines where former athletes from baseball to hockey players also try out.

?The big thing is foot quickness, agility, and body position and body control,?? Burkey said. ?Those are the things I look for at all the combines I hold. If you?re an athlete who played Division 1 football or baseball, then you?ve got a lot of those [skills]. I just have to find and separate those athletes somehow and that?s why I have those combines.

?I?m not looking for the NFL guys who are going to get drafted or the Major League Baseball prospects. I may be looking for them after their careers are over, but I?m not looking for those cats when I go into a school. I?m not looking at the No. 1 draft picks. I want the good athletes who want to compete and want to extend their competitive drive for another 8-10 years or whatever, so I?ll bring those guys in.??

Burkey?s one of the first of his kind, but there are plenty of football inroads in NASCAR. Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs owns a race team, and a number of former college players have made their way into the pits.

And hey, if Burkey?s looking for someone with good hands, whose athletic credentials have never been questioned, we hear Terrell Owens is still looking for work.

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - Jacob Peterson and Graham Zusi each scored second-half goals to lead Sporting KC to a 2-0 victory over the Philadelphia Union in the U.S. Open Cup semifinals Wednesday night.

Sporting KC will host the winner of the other semifinal game between Chivas USA and the Seattle Sounders on either August 7 or 8.

The victory by Sporting KC, tied for first in Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference with D.C. United, avenged their worst defeat this season, when they lost 4-0 to Philadelphia on June 23.

Obama team targets Mitt Romney's private finances

(AP) ? The Obama election campaign has a politically loaded question it wants voters to think about: What is Mitt Romney hiding?

Not a thing, Romney says. The Democrats are just trying to change the subject from the weak economy.

It's a newly intense back-and-forth as President Barack Obama's campaign team tries to cast his Republican opponent as a secretive rich guy who keeps his money in offshore accounts and refuses to release more of his tax returns.

The coordinated push, which includes stinging criticism from Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, web videos and television advertisements, comes as the Democrats grasp for ways to gain an advantage in a closely contested election and overcome a steady stream of lackluster economic news.

Getting personal, Biden declared Tuesday that Romney was "making a lie of the old adage, like father, like son" by not meeting the standards his father, George Romney, set when he released 12 years of tax returns during his 1968 presidential bid.

In a speech to Hispanic leaders in Las Vegas, Biden said of Romney: "He wants you to show your papers, but he won't show us his." It was a criticism that hit both Romney's financial reticence and his support for an Arizona immigration law that allows police to check the immigration status of people they stop.

The Obama campaign also posted a video on YouTube Tuesday that asked: "How long can Romney keep information on his investments in overseas tax havens secret? And why did he do it in the first place?"

Romney aides have called the barrage of attacks an "unfounded character assault" by a campaign desperate to distract attention from a sluggish economy that threatens the president's re-election prospects. And Romney insists his private financial records contain nothing illegal.

"I have followed the law," Romney said Tuesday on Fox News. "I have paid my taxes as due. I have also disclosed through all of the requirements of the government, every asset which I own, fairly and honestly, recognizing, of course, not to do so would be not only wrong but illegal and criminal."

Still, Romney has released only a single year's federal return ? for 2010 ? along with an estimate for 2011. Other returns could contain information about accounts he has held in Switzerland, the Cayman Islands and Bermuda, and that has created an opening for Democrats to accuse him of being secretive and taking advantage of tax loopholes that aren't available to average Americans.

"I think what's important if you're running for president is that the American people know who you are, what you've done and that you're an open book," Obama said Monday in a television interview.

The Obama campaign says its focus on Romney's private finances isn't about his wealth but about whether he is gaming the system and, if so, what it says about what he would do as president to address tax loopholes.

With less than four months until Election Day, Obama aides say they may run new television ads targeting Romney's close hold on his financial records. The campaign spent more than $2 million in May on an ad titled "Swiss Bank Account" that ran in politically important Iowa, Ohio and Virginia.

Democrats say the sustained criticism of Romney's financial secrecy is solidifying for voters the notion that the Republican challenger is out of touch with middle class economics. A Washington Post-ABC News poll out Tuesday showed Obama with an 11 point advantage over Romney as the one who "better understands the economic problems people in this country are having." Among registered voters, 51 percent said Obama better understands versus 40 percent who said Romney does.

But longtime Republican operative Charlie Black said the Obama team's focus on Romney's personal finances was a Washington-driven issue that was unlikely to resonate with voters who would rather hear the candidates talk about their plans for job creation and economic growth.

"What people want to know is, did Romney file all of the legally required disclosures, which he did," said Black, an informal adviser to Romney's campaign. "They already know he's a rich guy."

While federal laws require Romney to release a broad portrait of his personal finances, candidates are not required to release their personal tax returns, despite the longstanding precedent for doing so, first set by Romney's father.

Obama released seven years' worth of returns during his 2008 campaign.

Romney, who could be worth up to $250 million, would be among the nation's richest U.S. presidents if elected. He made his fortune at Bain Capital, a Boston-based private equity firm that has become a key part of the argument for his White House bid. He hasn't drawn a regular paycheck in more than a decade, however, and has instead lived off a series of investments.

Romney faced pressure to release details of his finances during the GOP primary from Republican opponents who warned that the issue could follow him into the general election.

"If there's nothing in there, why not release them, and if there is something in them, better to know now," former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said in January.

Romney did relent under party pressure and release his 2010 returns. That forced him to amend the personal financial disclosures he had filed earlier in the year because those documents didn't mention a Swiss bank account or a series of funds that were set up in foreign countries. Romney has yet to release his 2011 tax returns; he filed for a time extension. His advisers say he'll release them before the Nov. 6 election.

Romney's financial filings include at least six Cayman-based funds, worth between $7 million and $32 million, run by Bain. More than a dozen other funds based in the Caymans and Bermuda showed up on his 2010 federal tax returns. His campaign says he pays the same taxes he would if they were based in the United States.

Romney closed his UBS bank account in Switzerland in 2010 as he prepared to run for president.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection official Mark S. Borkowski will be a keynote speaker at the 2012 IEEE International Conference on Technologies for Homeland Security (HST '12).

Borkowski, an assistant commissioner in CBP's Office of Technology Innovation and Acquisition, will discuss border security technologies and outcomes.

HST '12, scheduled for 13-15 November in Waltham, Mass., outside Boston, will assemble global science and technology thought leaders to foster homeland security technology innovation. It will also showcase peer-reviewed technical papers highlighting emerging technologies in:

    • Cyber Security
    • Attack & Disaster Preparation, Recovery & Response
    • Borders & Maritime Security
    • Biometrics & Forensics

CBP, part of the Department of Homeland Security, guards approximately 4,000 miles of border with Canada, 2,000 miles of border with Mexico and 2,600 miles of shoreline. It annually processes approximately 340 million travelers at U.S. points of entry and more than 29 million trade entries. CBP's Border Patrol and Air and Marine agents' mission is to prevent illegal entry of people and goods into the United States.

In February testimony before the House Appropriations Committee Subcommittee on Homeland Security, Borkowski and colleagues Michael Kostelnik and Kevin K. McAleenan described some of the technology the agency employs:

"CBP has also deployed additional technology assets including mobile surveillance units, thermal imaging systems, and large-and small-scale non-intrusive inspection equipment along the southwest border, and currently has 128 aircraft and six Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) that provide critical aerial surveillance assistance to personnel on the ground. Over the next two years we will continue the deployment of technology to Arizona to enhance our security efforts and maintain our commitment to ensuring a safe and secure border."

Nearly 400 people attended HST '11, and input from international partners is encouraged.

    Spain fetes its champions

By DANIEL WOOLLS and ALAN CLENDENNING

    Associated Press

    Associated Press Sports

    updated 5:40 p.m. ET July 2, 2012

MADRID (AP) -Swathed in the red and yellow colors of Spain, hundreds of thousands packed central Madrid to give a hero's welcome home Monday to "La Roja" - the national soccer team that erased the economically struggling country's gloomy mood by winning the Euro 2012 Championship with flair.

With the celebrated team back, it was time to party for a second straight night. After a 2 1/2 hour open-air bus ride through the fan-packed streets, squad members took to a stage in Cibeles plaza against the backdrop of Madrid's majestic town hall and danced to pop music while spraying each other with sparkling wine.

"It was a merited triumph, we made history and now it's time to celebrate it," said mastermind midfielder Xavi Hernandez, adding that Spain hopes to build on the success of the past four years. "Next we*ll go for the Confederations Cup (2013) and then the World Cup in Brazil (2014), but first we want to enjoy this one."

Earlier, King Juan Carlos and members of the royal family congratulated the players at the Zarzuela Palace outside Madrid within hours of their returning from Kiev, where they crushed Italy 4-0 to defend their title Sunday night. The Iberia plane that brought them to the Spanish capital bore the logo "proud of our national team."

Team captain and goalie Iker Casillas proudly held the tournament cup as he emerged from the plane in Madrid with coach Vicente del Bosque.

In the palace gardens, the king, Prince Felipe, his wife, Princess Letizia, and one of the king's two daughters, Princess Elena, chatted and laughed with the players while two of the monarch's grandchildren gazed at and touched the cup.

"Congratulations on behalf of the family and the whole of Spain," the king said. "You have made the entire country happy."

Prior to reaching Cibeles, a multitude jammed the paths and roads along a near 5-kilometer (3-mile) victory route chanting "Champions! Champions! Oe, Oe, Oe!"

Blowing horns, they put up with a baking evening sun to catch a glimpse of their heroes as they paraded by on the bus, escorted by police on horseback and motorbikes. Thousands more fans cheered on from apartment balconies.

The players danced and sang, raised the trophy and sprayed drinks on the screaming, flag-waving crowds below as the bus crawled along at a snail's pace.

In Cibeles, organizers sprayed the crowds with water hoses to help them keep cool.

The team's elegant performance in the Euro 2012 final raised spirits across a country drowning in financial woes and rampant unemployment. It also made them the first team ever to bookend a World Cup championship (2010) with two Euro Cup triumphs (2008, 2012).

"This is historic and I'm here to support the team. They just might be able to do it again so we can win the (2014 World Cup) in Brazil," said Jose Luis Clemente, 47, a bus inspector clad in the team jersey. "It's a rare positive point against such a terrible crisis in my country. It gives you some relief."

    Still, he was realistic.

"No football win is going to solve the crisis. That's work for the economists and the politicians," he added.

The victory even had some Spaniards offering a tongue-in-cheek suggestion: Why not have the players run the country instead of Spain's feckless politicians?

In one newspaper cartoon, del Bosque is surrounded by Casillas and other stars such as Xavi and Andres Iniesta, who are all dressed up in suits for a new line of work.

"The solution to our problems: the government of prime minister del Bosque and his ministers," read the vignette in El Mundo.

As the country recovered from a national hangover of elation, pride and booze, Spaniards soaked up sweet memories of a night no one will forget. For a few hours, the realities of 25 percent unemployment, a grinding recession and a banking bailout from the European Union to the tune of up to ?100 billion ($125 billion) were put aside.

"No team has ever done what they have done, and it helps you to stop thinking about the crisis for 90 minutes during the game and the next day for the party," said Carlo del Pino, 25, a university student.

Del Pino said he hopes to teach physical education and coach one day but prospects are grim for graduates now with cutbacks in education funding, teacher pay cuts and layoffs of temporary teachers.

"I don't know where I will be working when I graduate, whether it's in Spain, Portugal or some other country," he said. "But all the Spanish kids who are here cheering the team may want to do sports because of the victory, so that could help me."

Retired air force officer Ramon Ramirez, 76, looked a bit out of place, dressed smartly in long sleeve formal shirt and pressed jeans amid a sea of folks decked out in red and yellow as he waited for the team to pass.

"For Spain, the headlines around the world have finally changed to good instead of the bad we've seen for months. Let's hope it continues," he said.

Maria Jose Herraiz, a 54-year-old homemaker, was so nervous she had to listen to the game on the radio instead of watching it on TV.

"When I heard people scream `Goal!' I would run to the TV," she said.

She called the victory marvelous, a potent shot of mood-boosting adrenalin for people sorely in need of it, but said reality would come back soon.

"It will be a sort of flower that blooms for just one day, because economic problems do not go away just because Spain wins," Herraiz said.

Her two adult children - aged 26 and 28 - are both still living at home. They are struggling on rock-bottom salaries as low as ?300 ($377) a month for half-day work despite being a computer scientist and a physicist.

Still, for one night, they came home just before dawn after a rousing celebration, their faces painted in red and yellow.
