SOUTH ROYALTON ? There will be a celebration of life for Constance B. Clark, 90, best known as Connie, Mom, Nana, and Gram, who died Aug. 12 at Brookside Nursing Home in White River Junction, on Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. at Stuart Clark Jr.?s residence, located on Roberts Road in South Royalton, VT.
She entered this world on July 9, 1922 to her proud parents, Charles N. and M. Helen Brown.
She lived most of her youth in Mystic, CT and graduated from Robert Fitch High School in Groton, CT. She then graduated from Katharine Gibbs College in Providence, RI and worked at General Dynamics.
She soon met and fell in love with Stuart D. Clark, and they married on Jan. 20, 1944. They moved to Florida, where Stuart was stationed, and shortly thereafter he was called to duty in Salpan, Japan during WWII. While Stuart was overseas, their first baby boy was born, and when Stuart came home from the war, they soon added four more children to their family.
Connie worked as a secretary for the Ledyard, CT School System, to always be near her children. She worked there until her retirement in 1980.
Connie and Stuart loved raising their five children on a little farm on Gallup Hill Road in Ledyard, CT. They enjoyed many camping trips with the children, which usually ended up in Vermont, where they eventually built a camp in Plymouth near Woodward Reservoir. They taught their children the value of hard, honest work; to appreciate the small things in life, and that less is more. This was best illustrated by their ideas of dining out, which was to take the children on family picnics. As their children grew up and left home, Connie and Stuart decided to retire to Vermont, and eventually made Royalton Hill in South Royalton their home. From there, they enjoyed traveling the East Coast together in their RV with their special canine companion, Trudy. Connie also enjoyed painting with watercolors, reading a good book, and bird watching, but what she enjoyed the most, was being with her grandchildren! Connie belonged to The South Royalton Women?s Club and The Red Hat Society, and could regularly be spotted driving her dear friends to various club meetings. When Stuart passed away in 1994, Connie kept even busier with family and friends. Some of her grandchildren?s fondest memories are: Feeding the ducks near the Mystic Seaport, eating Oreo cookies & Lucky Charms (because cookies with milk and sweet cereal were a treat at Nana/Gram?s,) ?the first one of you asleep gets a treat under their pillow in the morning,? and ?I love you to the moon and back and all around the earth.?
She is survived by her children, Stuart Clark Jr. of South Royalton, Pamela Clark of Simpsonville, S.C., Gail Fontaine of Ledyard, CT., Patricia Pierson of South Royalton and Jeff (Buck) Clark of Strafford and his wife Jen. Her children, 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren will miss her dearly. Connie will be forever remembered as putting her family first and foremost, and her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren promise here that they will emulate this characteristic as parents and grandparents.
She was predeceased by her husband, Stuart D. Clark, a daughter-in-law, Gail L. Clark and son-in-law, Alan Fontaine. She will be greatly missed, but Connie would be the first to say, ?If I don?t go home, I can never come back.? The family looks forward to her coming back for a visit in their dreams!
