LOS ANGELES -- Scott McKenzie, whose song "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" became a hit in 1967 during the city's "Summer of Love" ? has died on Saturday according to a statement on his website.

The 73-year-old singer had?battled Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a disease that affects the nervous system, and had been in and out of the hospital since 2010.

"Scott had been very ill recently and passed away in his home after two weeks in hospital," the statement read, noting that he had suffered a heart attack earlier this month. "Farewell our much loved and wonderful friend."

"San Francisco" was written by John Phillips, the leader of the 1960s group The Mamas and the Papas. According to E! Online, McKenzie and Phillips met in Virginia as teenagers, where they formed a doo-wop band called The Abstracts. But it was McKenzie who recorded Phillips' song, a song that stood as an anthem for the 1960s counterculture movement.

McKenzie also co-wrote "Kokomo," a No. 1 hit for The Beach Boys in 1988, and toured with The Mamas and the Papas in the 1990s.
