Oliver And Irene Bogler, Married Cancer Researchers, Diagnosed ...

The odds of a man getting breast cancer are about 1 in 1,000, which makes the story of the Boglers all the more surprising when it comes to statistics: The couple, both cancer researchers, were diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer at the age of 46, ABC News reports.

"We should go to Vegas now right," Oliver Bogler told ABC News during an on-camera interview. "You wonder what, what are the odds?"

Bogler, 46, is currently going through his second month of chemotherapy, and he plans to have a mastectomy in the spring. His wife, Irene, now 52, was diagnosed several years ago and is currently cancer-free.

"I have to tell you, it would have been better to go to the doctor sooner but I couldn't imagine this happening twice in our family. Having a wife who had [breast cancer], I thought it would be weird saying I had it too," Bogler told ABC.

Visit ABC News for more about the couple's battle with breast cancer.

The Boglers are not the only couple to be diagnosed with cancer at about the same time.

Nathan and Elisa Bond of Brooklyn, N.Y., learned that they each had cancer just nine days apart, the New York Times reported last year. However, the Bonds each had a different type of cancer: Nathan was diagnosed with rectal cancer, while Elisa was diagnosed with breast cancer.

What happened to the Boglers, on the other hand, is something that male cancer specialist Dr. Sharon Giordano told ABC she'd never heard before.

Atlanta's Fox 5 notes that many men who've been diagnosed with the disease say didn't even know breast cancer could affect males.

As the Huffington Post previously reported, research has shown that both the rarity and the lack of awareness of male breast cancer contribute to the cancer often being more advanced when detected in men. Another factor at play is that breast cancer development is related to hormonal exposure, which usually isn't found in males.

Harvey Singer, the founder of HISBreastCancer.org, told HuffPost Live that fighting breast cancer as a man taught him that men need to be their own personal advocates when it comes to facing the disease. Singer said he found that treatments are often geared toward women.

?They don?t know how to segregate that from a male and a female, so they just treat you with the common things they would treat a woman with. That was the most disturbing part to me,? Singer said.

Did you see that? How could you miss it?

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? You may have received CPR training some time ago, but would you remember the proper technique in an emergency? Would you know what to do in the event of an earthquake or a fire? A new UCLA psychology study shows that people often do not recall things they have seen -- or at least walked by -- hundreds of times.

For the study, 54 people who work in the same building were asked if they knew the location of the fire extinguisher nearest their office. While many of the participants had worked in their offices for years and had passed the bright red extinguishers several times a day, only 13 out of the 54 -- 24 percent -- knew the location.

When asked to find a fire extinguisher, however, everyone was able to do so within a few seconds; most were surprised they had never noticed them. The researchers found no significant differences between men and women, or between older and younger adults.

"Just because we've seen something many times doesn't mean we remember it or even notice it," said Alan Castel, an associate professor of psychology at UCLA and lead author of the study. "If I asked you to draw the front of a dime or the front of a dollar bill from memory, how well could you do that? You might get some elements right. Do you know who the president is? On the dime, is he facing left or right? Does it say 'In God We Trust' on the front of the dollar or the back? Do you know what else it says? You've seen it so many times, but you probably haven't paid much attention to it."

Castel said that not noticing things isn't necessarily bad, particularly when those things are not important in your daily life. "It might be a good thing not to burden your memory with information that is not relevant to you," he said.

But with safety information, such as knowing where fire extinguishers are or what to do in an emergency, being prepared can, of course, be very useful.

"When you're on an airplane, do you know where the life vest is and what to do in the event of an emergency?" Castel asked. "You've been told many times, but how would you respond under stressful conditions, when there could be smoke and people screaming?"

A few months after being asked the location of the nearest fire extinguisher, the study participants were asked again if they knew where the closest one was. All of them knew.

"We don't notice something if we're attending to something else," Castel said. "Fire extinguishers are bright red and very conspicuous, but we're almost blind to them until they become relevant."

What does this tell us about the importance of training, whether for emergencies or something as common as learning a new computer program?

Castel stresses that making errors during training is useful. As with the fire extinguisher exercise, errors -- or simple oversights -- can teach us that we don't know something well and need to pay more attention in order to remember it.

"It's good if errors happen during training and not during an event where you need the information," he said. "That's part of the learning process."

The study is published in the journal Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics.

Castel's co-authors are Michael Vendetti, a UCLA psychology graduate student, and Keith Holyoak, a UCLA professor of psychology. The study's participants work in UCLA's psychology building.

FCC Offers Cybersecurity Planning Assistance to Small Businesses ...

869240_80286019The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has released an online tool to assist small businesses with cybersecurity planning. The vast majority of small businesses reportedly do not have a formal plan to protect themselves from cyber threats, nor do they have a recovery plan in the event of a security breach. Such breaches can result in massive losses, sometimes in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. The FCC?s program helps small business owners understand the types of risks that exist online, available methods of protection against such threats, and the availability of cyber insurance to help businesses avoid interruptions in their activities.

The FCC launched the Small Biz Cyber Planner in October 2011. One year later, on October 17, 2012, it introduced the Small Biz Cyber Planner 2.0 (SBCP) in a public-private partnership between government agencies and IT and IT security companies like the Department of Homeland Security, Symantec, McAfee, HP, and Microsoft. According to the FCC, eighty-three percent of small businesses have not enacted cybersecurity plans, giving them no infrastructure to protect against hackers and other threats, and no contingency for cyberattacks and security breaches. The government has made cybersecurity a priority, as it becomes clear that the security of businesses? computer systems affects national security.

Small Biz Cyber Planner 2.0

The SBCP enables small businesses to create customized plans to protect against cyber threats and to respond to attacks. The program can advise small business owners on a wide array of cybersecurity issues, including both the nature and structure of a company?s network and how best to prevent or respond to breaches. It includes tips on avoiding spyware, viruses, and other forms of malicious software, both by regulating employees? internet access and securing wifi networks against intrusion. Businesses no longer simply use a server with networked workstations, as smartphone and tablets have also become indispensable business tools.

The result is a cybersecurity plan based on the parameters set by the user, but it is still a template-based document using boilerplate language. The plan is useful in educating business owners and managers about cyber risks and ways to approach cybersecurity, but most businesses should seek personalized assistance from a risk management consultant.

Cyber Insurance

The SBCP addresses the availability of cyber risk insurance, a growing field in protecting businesses from threats and losses. Many of the losses that may result from cyber attacks do not fall under the protection of a typical business liability policy. Ordinary liability policies might cover physical damage to inventory, equipment, or facilities, including physical damage to computer systems. They might not, however, cover the loss of the data contained on those machines. This is particularly true when a business stores data off-site in the ?cloud.? Understanding these risks is critical to developing an effective cybersecurity plan.

Article Directory USA :: Sehwags Good Attitude in Batting

This article explains the attitude of Virender Sehwag as he cuts the ball high above boundary as he keeps on scoring. However, he has to have good practice with cricket bowling machine.

Cricket bowling machine can help Sehwag to continue his outstanding performance as report says he needs more perfection for facing spinners. Cricket bowling machine gives utmost practice to any batsman and hence batsmen should use bowling machine of cricket in their daily practice. Sehwag's batting attitude so far is remarkable as though he is not able to maintain it consistently.

Sehwag said once, "You just react to the ball. If the ball is there to be hit, you just hit it. Don't worry that this is a Test or one-dayer or T20. You just hit it. Because it's your routine. Every time you practise in the nets, you just go and see the ball and hit the ball. You are not worried about 'what if I get out'. You are not worried about a four or a sixer, one or two. You just hit the ball. And enjoy the sound. At the end of the day if you hit the ball or defend the ball, you love the sound that comes when the ball hits the bat."

However, Dhoni said, "When it comes to Viru, you need a bit more time to understand him. It is not easy to sit here and say a few lines on how effective he is. All those who have shared the dressing room with him realise that his mindset is very different. He is very positive and bats with instinct. It doesn't matter if the wicket is turning or seaming. He only looks to score runs. His mindset is so different that it doesn't really matter whether he is in form or not. He just keeps thinking positive. He has been working a lot on his batting, but his approach remains the same. It is the mindset that really helps you get back into the game. If you see, the crucial decision of his career was when he decided that he will open the innings. It was a big challenge for him and he accepted it. He has the best statistics. He is someone who is very different for everyone else. He has got a very important role from the start because he's someone who can play his shots from the very first delivery. He looks to put pressure on the bowler. It certainly becomes a bit difficult for the bowler to get back into the game. Of course, not to forget the experience he has got in all the formats. And, also the fact that he can get a few wickets as well. We haven't been using him much, though."

Sunday Series: Fitness/Beauty/Health Trends of Fall

?

Yoga

Image from: Yoga / Shutterstock

Obviously in the spirit of gluttony, I decided that this Sunday Series would focus on the up-and-coming in the health/beauty/fitness domains online. Where are people looking for the latest tips and trips to?coral?their body into a more flattering shape? What products are gaining traction in time for the holidays? What will, and what won?t, stave off the insulation of winter?

Well, Oprah, you did it again! TheBestLife.com secures the top fastest growing spot, but still has a long way to go considering it?s rank month to month. The next thing I noticed was BikramYoga.com, a type of Yoga employing intensely hot conditions (ideally?105?F). As someone who avoids putting myself in?105?F conditions at all costs, I?ve never tried it, but all of my chicest friends think it?s the best and evidently this impression is spreading through the rest of the USA?and just in time for the holidays!

Lastly, PolarUSA.com take the fifth spot. This is the first product to make the top ten growers, which might be a sign of impending success as holiday shopping gets into full swing.

France: Sarkozy's party battles to save itself

PARIS (AP) ? Parents struggle to explain it to their kids. Ambassadors struggle to explain it to their governments. The only thing that's clear is that French politics is a mess.

Former President Nicolas Sarkozy's conservative party led one of the world's biggest economies for a decade and now, in the space of a week, has melted down into something that may never be put back together again.

A mediation effort Sunday failed to reconcile the Union for a Popular Movement party or figure out who's in charge, seven days after a disputed election for a new party leader. The conflict looks headed now for the courts. The outcome could reshape France's political landscape and eventually weigh on Europe's direction too.

Central to the dispute is debate among French conservatives over immigration and Islam in the country with Western Europe's largest Muslim population. The election a week ago split party members into those leaning toward the anti-immigrant far right, represented by Jean-Francois Cope, and those hewing to more centrist views, supporting Francois Fillon.

Cope, who led France's push to ban face-covering Islamic veils and talks of anti-white racism, was initially declared winner of the Nov. 19 election.

Then uncounted votes were discovered that could swing the vote in Fillon's favor.

Accusations of fraud swirled. Insults flew. The week wore on, and the party still had no clear leader.

On Sunday, a UMP commission that handles vote disputes met, then broke up in acrimony, the Sipa news agency reported.

Hope turned to former Prime Minister Alain Juppe, who said the dispute has been "irresponsible and disastrous" and convened both candidates Sunday night to try to mediate and keep the party he founded in one piece.

After the meeting, he tweeted, "The conditions for mediation are lacking. My mission is over."

Cope said the party commission should examine the complaints and declare a winner.

Fillon, whose supporters say that commission is too Cope-friendly, said he'd go to court instead to uncover "the truth of the results and return the voice to the party members." In a statement, he said Cope rejected the mediation effort and called him responsible for the party's "failure."

Cope and Fillon want to lead opposition to Socialist President Francois Hollande ? and run for president themselves in 2017. Since Sarkozy lost elections in May in a wave of anti-austerity sentiment in May, France's presidency, parliament and most regional governments have all been under Socialist control.

The UMP fiasco has worried officials beyond France's borders as well. Sweden's ambassador, Gunnar Lund, tweeted, "I'm trying to explain to my government what's happening at the heart of the UMP. Not easy!"

In the European Union, Hollande's Socialists have pushed against public spending cuts for indebted countries that use the shared euro currency, and battled Britain over cutbacks in the EU budget.

A UMP collapse would benefit the Socialists in the short term. But some French commentators have expressed concern that the Socialists ? who long suffered their own divisions and who still lack cohesion ? need a robust opposition to focus their energies at a time when they need to be making tough decisions. Hollande's popularity is weak six months into his term, as the economy struggles and one in 10 workers is looking for a job.

Meanwhile, France's far right National Front is hoping to capitalize on the UMP's troubles and bring in new support from the more hard-right members of the conservative party. And a new centrist party, UDI, says it has already reaped benefits, winning new members over the past week amid increasing disillusion with the UMP.

All this means nostalgia for the charismatic but divisive Sarkozy is on the rise, with many conservatives hoping he returns to politics. In a sign of how low things have sunk in French politics, support for Sarkozy resurfaced even as he was named special witness in an investigation involving alleged illegal campaign cash that could see him face charges.

As the UMP's troubles dominated French media, the Europe-1 radio website published a guide Sunday for parents trying to explain it to their kids. One bit of advice: how to answer if your child asks, "Is the UMP a mafia?"

Family of 14 selling Colorado home, will live on the road and pursue ...

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. ? A family of 14 is selling their Colorado home, and they?re going to live on the road in pursuit of a lot of dreams.

The ?cheaper-by-the-dozen? style family of 12 children is getting ready to dump it all and head out of Glenwood Springs. The family is into water sports ? especially kayaking.

?We introduced a couple of the kids to kayaking and they took to it like they were born in the water,? said Dan Kellogg, father of this crew. ?When the younger kids saw the older ones in the boats, they just had to try!?

All of the kids buy into this ?simpler way of life? their parents are moving toward. All but one of the children, 18-year-old Kerry, the oldest daughter, are being home-schooled. Kerry graduated from Glenwood Springs High School last spring.

?I am so ready for this,? said Kerry. ?I am over Glenwood, I just want to enjoy new adventures and see new places.?

The family had practice with this ?life in and RV? endeavor this past summer. They traveled the country letting the kids enter kayak events on rivers and streams all over. Now, they will continue to home-school the kids and live out of the motor home.

?We will be a bit cramped, but we will stop at laundromats to do the wash ? they offer six machines in a row ? so we can get it done in no time,? says mom, Susie Kellogg. ?We give up things such as going to the bathroom anytime we want to go, but we do take ?R&R? stops at hotels and motels.?

Travel this time around will be a bit easier with two new drivers in the family. They will take all their vehicles and leave behind what they say is the ?rat race of living for your home and things you work to acquire.?

The Kellogg crew hits the road when the mountain-top home is sold. They hope that will happen by January.

Fresh Ideas And Tips For Home Improvement Projects | FBF Article ...

Some people hear the words home improvement and automatically think disaster, but this doesn?t necessarily have to be the case. You are going to hit snags in most home improvement projects, so if you are attempting to tackle the plumbing, you might want to leave that to the professionals, to avoid a major home improvement blunder. A good rule of thumb is if your not sure ask.

If your home improvement project involves moving appliances or other furniture in your house, make sure to put something down to protect your floors. Particularly if you have hardwood flooring, taking out large items can make a big mess and scratch up your flooring. Taking a few minutes to protect your floors can save you a lot of money in the long run.

Maybe the house or apartment you?re living in is great, but the view to the outside is not. If you have any offending sights that you wish to conceal, consider putting some plants or flowers on your window sill or in a window box. If you would like to take drastic measures in concealing your offending view, plant some shrubs or large trees in front of your window. This can ensure that you have a nicer view.

If your living room is dark even though you have a lot of windows, there are ways to ensure that light will get through. Installing skylights is a great way to save on energy bills because it cuts down on the use of lamps, and it will ensure that natural lighting comes through. Choosing to paint your living room warm and inviting colors such as orange, yellow, or light brown can create a feeling of warmth and light. Make sure to decorate with light wood colored furniture instead of dark and heavy oaks.

Rearranging your furniture can be fun, but oftentimes you need visual aides to determine where to put everything. A great way to arrange furniture with visual aiding is by taking a piece of graph paper and cutting out square shapes in a scaled format to represent your different pieces of furniture. You can easily toss your graph paper pieces around and decide how everything can fit together. It definitely saves you the trouble of pushing your furniture around first.

Thinking green about home improvements not only means being environmentally friendly, but it also means taking action on your lawn. If the lawn looks horrendous with bare spots and weeds, seed and fertilize it. If it is damaged beyond repair get a new sod laid to give your home a great new look.

Painting home improvement projects require dry days. This tip is critical for having success in painting your home. On wet and humid afternoons, paint dries more slowly on the walls, which means that you will be at your project longer. Only painting on the dry days will cut your time in between coats and speed up the project overall.

Most of the home improvements that you need done can be done on your own. Hiring a contractor is important if it is an extensive job that takes professional experience. Certain drywall jobs, simple plumbing repairs and interior painting can be done without professional experience. You can save a lot of money by simply doing the repairs yourself.

You should never go cheap on kitchen cabinetry. The cost of quality cabinet work can seem steep at first, but remember that your cabinets will undergo tremendous amounts of abuse and any failure will be a critical one. In government housing projects, the most high-quality interior equipment, is often the kitchen cabinetry. That is how important durability and quality construction is when it comes to cabinet work.

Painting is one of the quickest and least expensive methods to improve your home?s appearance. If you are contemplating repainting the exterior of your home, you should evaluate whether you can do the job yourself. Painting is a job that requires only a few basic tools and a moderate level of skill. If you do your own repainting, you can save a significant amount of money. When evaluating if you can do it yourself, you need to consider how much available time you have to do this time consuming job, your health and fitness level and whether you possess the skills to get the job done.

Match your fire extinguisher to the room where it is being used. The color will be the same old red but fire extinguishers are classed according to function. Class B?s are most appropriate for the kitchen but Class A?s would probably work well in the rest of the house.

Build your own utility shelves with furring strips, plywood, and screws. Build two identical ladder-like sides using the furring strips and screws. Connect them perpendicularly by screwing on additional furring cut to the width of the shelves. Finally, screw plywood panels in place to make the shelf surfaces.

Consider green alternatives to standard building materials when renovating or remodeling your home. Materials like cork and bamboo come from sustainable resources and are used to create flooring, furniture and other items that you can use to update your home in an environmentally conscious way. Using these materials is a great way to support eco-friendly practices and lessen your impact on the environment.

If you have a lot of cords hanging out of your entertainment stands then you know what a pain and unsightly view cords can be. You can easily clean up your mess by using Velcro tape, which is widely available, at most stores for about $5. Roll up the unused portions of your cord and hold them together with the Velcro tape for a clean and tidy look.

As you may now be starting to understand, the home-improvement process does not need to be as difficult or time consuming as you thought it might be. The important thing to remember is to go one step at a time. By following the tips and advice from this article you will help to ensure your home-improvement project meets with great success.

Archos' ?275 13.3-inch FamilyPad designed to encourage family time

DNP Archos's 133inch FamilyPad is designed for FamilyTime

Three months after we spied the Archos FamilyPad on the FCC, it's finally making its debut just in time for the holiday shopping season. As its name suggests, the 13.3-inch tablet is designed for a whole family to gather around -- though we doubt it would be very comfortable if your family has more than four people. With 10x multitouch support, Archos claims families can use it to watch movies, keep organized, share pictures and play digital board games; the company even pre-installed a few of the latter to get your family started. The FamilyPad doesn't have the best of specs, with a 1,280x800 HD display, 8GB flash memory, a microSD card slot, a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 CPU, HDMI output and a front and rear camera that are 2-megapixels each. It does run Ice Cream Sandwich and would offer "a variety of email accounts for each family member." Those in the UK can purchase it for £274.99 ($438) when it's available in December, while US residents might have to wait a little longer. Maybe you can give your kids some ChildPads to play on their own instead; they might appreciate it more than enforced togetherness.

Pakistan: Malala's wounded friends back in school

MINGORA, Pakistan (AP) ? For one month the dreams kept coming. The voice, the shots, the blood. Her friend Malala slumped over.

Shazia Ramazan, 13, who was wounded by the same Taliban gunman who shot her friend Malala Yousufzai, returned home last week after a month in a hospital, where she had to relearn how to use her left arm and hand. Memories of the Taliban bullets that ripped into her remain, but she is welcoming the future.

"For a long time it seemed fear was in my heart. I couldn't stop it," she said. "But now I am not afraid," she added, self-consciously rubbing her left hand where a bullet pierced straight through just below the thumb.

Now Shazia and her friend Kainat Riaz, who was also shot, return to school for the first time since the Oct. 8 attack when a Taliban gunman opened fire on Malala outside the Khushal School for Girls, wounding Shazia and Kainat in the frenzy of bullets.

The Taliban targeted Malala because of her outspoken and relentless objection to the group's regressive interpretation of Islam that keeps women at home and bars girls from school.

Malala is still undergoing treatment and unable to come back. But among her friends in her hometown of Mingora in the idyllic Swat Valley, she is a hero.

"Malala was very brave and she was always friendly with everyone. We are proud of her," said the 16-year-old Kainat, wrapped in a large purple shawl and sitting on a traditional rope bed. Her mother Manawar, a health worker, sat by her side, praised her daughter's bravery and with a smile said: "She gets her courage from me." Although conservative and refusing to have her picture taken, Kainat's mother slammed attacks on girls' education and warned Pakistan will fail if girls are not educated.

Quick to laugh, Kainat ? who comes from a long line of educators in her family ? looked forward to returning to school. "I want to study. I am not afraid," she said.

The authorities however are not taking any chances. Armed policemen have been deployed to both Shazia's and Kainat's home and will escort them both to school.

Kainat's home is hidden behind high walls with 8- foot-high steel gates, tucked away in a neighborhood of brown square cement buildings. A foul smelling sewer runs the length of the street where armed policemen patrol, eyeing everyone suspiciously.

Outside Shazia's home, a policeman wearing a bullet proof vest sits on a plastic garden chair with a Kalashnikov resting across his knees. Three policemen patrol a nearby narrow street that is flanked by roaring open fires where vats of hot oil boil and sticky sweets are made and sold.

Shazia, who has ambitions to become an army doctor, is a stubborn teenager. She doesn't want the police escort.

"They say I need the police. But I say I don't need any police," she said, pushing her glasses firmly back on her nose. "I don't want the police to come with me to school because then I will stand out from the other students. But I shouldn't."

At their school, the students are quick to attack the Taliban and display a giant poster of Malala. The school, which has more than 500 students, only closed its doors briefly at the height of the Taliban's hold on the region in 2008 and early 2009. It was then that Malala began to blog, recording her unhappiness with Taliban edicts ordering girls out of school.

Although she was barely 9 years old then, Shazia remembers those days.

"Times were very bad. Girls were hiding their books under their burqas. Compared to then, now is a very good time," she said, her pink shawl covering her head. "We are strong."

Both the army and the police are deployed outside the school, whose name means "happy," and journalists were not permitted to pass its black iron gate until last week when an Associated Press reporter and photographer were allowed inside. Authorities feared drawing attention, but the students within seemed unconcerned, often offering words of support for Malala and saying they weren't afraid to come to school.

Even the shiest among them would whisper in a friend's ear to say: "Tell her I will not stop studying."

Each morning the school principal gave the students a progress report on Malala's condition.

"She is getting better every day and she asks about all of us and what we are doing," said 15-year-old Mahnoor, one of Malala's close friends. "When it happened we just cried and prayed. We weren't worried for ourselves. We were just worried for her."

Twelve-year-old Emar said of the Taliban: "They are thinking that she is a girl and she cannot do anything. They are thinking that only boys can do things. They are wrong. Girls can do anything."

In a strong voice and speaking in English, Gulranga Ali, 17, said students have "gotten courage from her (Malala) and everyone is attending school. No one is staying home." She said the attack has turned the country against extremists and "now every girl and child is saying 'I want to be Malala.'"

Malala's father says the family will return to Pakistan after his daughter is well enough.

But even her classmates worry for her safety.

"I don't think she will come for education anymore in Swat. She will not be safe here. Now she is a celebrity," said Gulranga.

There is also a deepening concern that Malala's attacker has not been arrested, that the outrage her shooting generated throughout Pakistan has subsided without substantive changes and that fear will prevent real change.

Ahmed Saeed, a close friend of Malala's father, said politicians and Pakistan's military establishment still have to decide if they will support Malala's worldview or that of the Taliban. Saeed said the teenager will have another operation in three months to reconstruct her skull but that she is talking and walking "and gossiping with her family."

In what has been cheered as a first step toward compulsory education for both boys and girls in Pakistan, Parliament last week introduced legislation making it a crime to keep a child at home. Offending parents can be fined upward of $500.

Still, earlier this month the Taliban attacked on a busload of girls returning from school in the tribal regions, throwing acid in their faces. In a statement, the Taliban accused the girls of embracing the West through education.

"I don't know if this has changed Pakistan," Shazia's father said of the shooting. Still, he wants his daughter to continue at school.

"Now I want to be an example to other girls," Shazia said. "They (Taliban) can't stop us from going to school."

Memorize the 1,000 Most Common Words in a Language Before Immersing Yourself In It

Memorize the 1,000 Most Common Words in a Language Before Immersing Yourself In ItWe've heard time and time again that the best way to learn a new language is immerse yourself in it completely. But when you do that, you still need a foundation to build on. Over at the Guardian, writer Jonathan Foer talks about how he managed to learn a language in about 22 hours of work, and how the 1,000 most common words were the magic number for the rest of his experience.

Foer used a service called Memrise to actually learn the vocabulary, but the interesting part comes from what he learned when he started speaking the language with the natives:

It goes without saying that memorising the 1,000 most common words in Lingala, French or Chinese is not going to make anyone a fluent speaker. That would have been an unrealistic goal. But it turns out to be just enough vocabulary to let you hit the ground running once you're authentically immersed in a language. And, more importantly, that basic vocabulary gives you a scaffolding to which you can attach other words as you hear them... [A]s I packed my memory with more and more words, these connections started to make sense and I began to notice the same grammatical formulas elsewhere?-and could even pick them up in conversation. This sort of pattern recognition happens organically over time when a child learns a language, but giving myself all the data points to work with at once certainly made the job easier, and faster.

Learning a language is never an easy task, but as Foer points out, it's not nearly as hard as we all make it out to be. Of course, 1,000 words is just an estimate that we've mentioned before, but it's also a reasonable goal to push yourself toward learning. Head over to the Guardian for the full story on how he went about learning a language as quickly as possible. If 22 hours seems a little too quick, we've covered how to learn a language in just 90 days.

Google Investing $75 Million Into New 50MW Wind Farm ...

?
Google is continuing to show its commitment to development of a renewable energy economy, investing $75 million dollars into a 50MW wind farm in Rippey, Iowa.

20121119-011250.jpg

Google has invested a ton into clean energy in recent years, benefiting from the financial savings gained by doing so as well as the good PR (while doing its best to ?do no evil?). In particular, it has put most of it?s money into wind and solar power projects.

?The Mountain View behemoth keeps writing checks, and the latest one is The $75 million dollar investment is for an undisclosed stake in a 50-megawatt wind farm that?s located about an hour from Des Moines,? TreeHugger?s Michael Graham Richard writes.

20121119-011255.jpg

?The Rippey wind project, which is currently operational, was developed by RPM Access and should generate enough energy to power over 15,000 homes. The turbines were made by Nordex USA at their Jonesboro facility in Arkansas.?

This latest investment now brings Google?s total investments in renewable energy up to $990 million. I wonder if there will be some ceremony of sorts when it hits $1 billion.

Alaskan town home to airport with no planes and harbor with no road

The new, unused harbor in Akutan, Alaska (City of Akutan)Remember Alaska's infamous bridge to nowhere? Well, another town in "Seward's Icebox" has upped the ante after building an unused $75.5 million airport and a $29 million harbor with no roads connecting to the town.

The Aleutians community of Akutan is home to just over 1,000 seasonal workers and 75 full-time residents, though only about five boats, as KUCB reports.

"I personally own half a vessel," Akutan mayor Joseph Bereskin told the publication. Though, for the record, Bereskin says he supported construction of the harbor and hopes it will grow in popularity once a connecting road is eventually built.

The Army Corps of Engineers, using $29 million in federal stimulus money, built the harbor.

"Yes. It's not normal," Steve Boardman, head of the Army Corps of Engineers civil projects division, told KUCB. "And it has prevented the construction of harbors in the past, when that supporting infrastructure is not there."

There have been tentative plans to build a connecting road for years, but Jacob Stepetin of the Akutan Traditional Council says the project still lacks financial commitments from the state and federal governments and local businesses.

And along with the missing road, the harbor is also currently lacking electricity, running water, and, well, boats. The hope is that along with possessing "strategic importance," the harbor will be used by Trident Seafoods, the largest seafood processor in the Aleutians.

The inactive harbor now shares Akutan territory with the nearby airport. Residents are required to stake a six-mile hovercraft ride to reach the airstrip, which is located on a nearby island. However, there are no airlines currently serving the airport.

Taiwan's e-commerce value to reach $22.6 bln | The China Times

The value of Taiwan?s e-commerce sector will reach 6,600 billion New Taiwan dollars (22.6 billion U.S. dollars) this year, a 17 percent growth over 2011, economic authorities said Monday.

The figure is predicted to top 1 trillion NTD (34.3 billion U.S. dollars) in 2015. The Chinese mainland will be a key market for Taiwan?s e-commerce industry, according to Taiwan?s economic authorities at a seminar on promoting the development of e-commerce.

The industry is one of the few in Taiwan that is growing despite the global economic recession.

Taiwan authorities have initiated a program for promoting Chinese language e-commerce and transaction safety, in a bid to help practitioners enter the fast-growing mainland market, which has more than 500 million Internet users.

Taiwan and the Chinese mainland will hold discussions on issues that hinder Taiwan?s e-commerce practitioners from entering mainland market. These include customs clearance and obtaining the mainland?s business certificates for Internet Content Providers (ICP).

?The Chinese mainland has a bigger Internet market and abundant opportunities for businesses,? said Zhuang Longlong, founder of Taiwan-based online shopping company PGmall.com. The firm has benefited from entering the mainland market with turnover increasing.

Taobao.com, the leading online shopping company from the Chinese mainland, said at the seminar that the website?s registered users from Taiwan had reached 500,000, with a 50 percent growth in transactions.

?We will strengthen cooperation with Taiwan?s banking and logistics industries to provide more convenience to Taiwanese consumers. We will also help Taiwan?s e-commerce practitioners to enter the Chinese mainland through our platform,? said Li Pengjun, director of Taobao?s overseas business.

Rob Gronkowski Injury: Bill Belichick's Bad Karma Leads To Broken Arm For Gronk, Says Twitter

Merriam-Webster defines "karma" as "the force generated by a person's actions held in Hinduism and Buddhism to perpetuate transmigration and in its ethical consequences to determine the nature of the person's next existence."

The injury to Rob Gronkowski late in the New England Patriots' blowout win over the Indianapolis Colts had many people throwing this term around. In this case, it wasn't Gronk's own actions that were perceived to have resulted in the force that broke his arm. Rather, it was the decision of Patriots coach Bill Belichick to keep his offensive starters on the field deep into the 59-24 rout that had everyone chalking up the injury to bad karma.

As first reported by Comcast SportsNet New England, Gronkowski suffered a broken forearm while blocking for the extra point attempt following the Pats' eighth touchdown of the game.

The Pats were leading 45-24 before Tom Brady touched the ball in the fourth quarter yet he remained in the game, orchestrating two more touchdown drives. The last drive was capped by the extra point play that resulted in Gronkowski's injury. The Patriots scored their 59th point of the game on that play.

Pete Prisco

Somebody tell me what the hell Tom Brady was doing throwing passes late in a 53-24 game? That' just Belichick arrogance

Gronkowski went to the locker room following that PAT and did not return for the team's final offensive possession. Perhaps chastened by the Gronkowski injury, Brady did not play on that last drive. Backup quarterback Ryan Mallet handed the ball off three times before a punt on that final possession. Although the Patriots were characteristically vague about the nature of the injury immediately following the game, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com reported that Gronkowski would miss 4-6 weeks with the injury.

As news of the severity of Gronkowski's injury spread, many took to social media to blame Belichick for keeping his starters in the game so long and running up the score.

Should Gronkowski have even been on the field at that point? Should the Patriots still have been tacking on points with the game in hand?

Israeli government websites under mass hacking attack

1 day

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - More than 44 million hacking attempts have been made on Israeli government websites since Wednesday when Israel began its Gaza air strikes, the government said on Sunday.?

Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz said just one hacking attempt was successful on a site he did not want to name, but it was up and running after 10 minutes of downtime.?

Typically, there are a few hundred hacking attempts a day on Israeli sites, the ministry said.?

Attempts on defense-related sites have been the highest, while 10 million attempts have been made on the site of Israel's president, 7 million on the Foreign Ministry and 3 million on the site of the prime minister.?

A ministry spokesman said while the attacks have come from around the world, most have been from Israel and the Palestinian territories.?

"The ministry's computer division will continue to block the millions of cyber attacks," Steinitz said. "We are enjoying the fruits of our investment in recent years in developing computerized defense systems."?

Steinitz has instructed his ministry to operate in emergency mode to counter attempts to undermine government sites.?

Both sides in the Gaza conflict, but particularly Israel, are embracing the social media as one of their tools of warfare. The Israeli Defense Force has established a presence on nearly every platform available while Palestinian militants are active on Twitter.?

"The war is taking place on three fronts. The first is physical, the second is on the world of social networks and the third is cyber," said Carmela Avner, Israel's chief information officer.?

Last month, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said cyberspace is the battlefield of the future, with attackers already going after banks and other financial systems. U.S. banks have been under sustained attack by suspected Iranian hackers thought to be responding to economic sanctions aimed at forcing Tehran to negotiate over its nuclear program.

Ask Engadget: best universal remote?

Ask Engadget best universal remote

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from Marc and Jack, who are going ocean-mad with all of their remote controls. If you're looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

Marc wrote

"My home theater currently has seven remote controls, which I'd like to narrow down. I know there are solutions available which are massively arcane, but is there something simple that the crowd can recommend?"

Jack wrote

"Can you recommend a universal remote control that works with a PS3 and Apple TV that doesn't suck?"

Well friends,

  • Gear 4's Unity remote has earned rave reviews thanks to its ease of use and near universal application (except for the PS3)
  • While Griffin's Beacon offers the same capability, but also works with Android devices
  • If you're serious about including the PS3 in your setup, you could splash out on Logitech's Harmony IR-to-Bluetooth adapter.

But perhaps, out there, is something even better. That's where you, the Engadget Faithful come in. Why not share your experience (or your product) in the comments below?

Anxiety linked to chest pain in children

ScienceDaily (Nov. 16, 2012) ? Psychological factors can have as much-or more-impact on pediatric chest pain as physical ones, a University of Georgia study found recently. UGA psychologists discovered pediatric patients diagnosed with noncardiac chest pain have higher levels of anxiety and depression than patients diagnosed with innocent heart murmurs-the noise of normal turbulent blood flow in a structurally normal heart.

The UGA research was done in collaboration with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory University.

"The fact that these psychological symptoms are higher in noncardiac chest pain patients suggests the psychological symptoms may be playing a role in the presentation of chest pain," said Jennifer Lee, a doctoral candidate in the UGA Franklin College of Arts and Sciences and the study's lead author.

The results of the study, which were published Nov. 5 in the Journal of Pediatric Psychology, show a statistically significant increase in anxiety and depression among patients who are later diagnosed with noncardiac chest pain when compared to patients diagnosed with innocent heart murmurs. Lee said it is not clear if the anxiety is a cause of the pain or if pain caused the anxiety in the sample group.

"The higher levels weren't so high as to cause a clinical diagnosis on their own, but when you contrast the two groups, there were statistically significant differences," said study co-author Ronald Blount, a psychology professor in the Franklin College.

The study included 129 patients ages 8 to 18. The group completed surveys prior to diagnosis. All patients were essentially in the same situation-sitting in a cardiology office awaiting their unknown medical diagnosis.

"We are highlighting that psychology has a part in these symptoms," Blount said, "and screening for psychological, as well as medical factors, is one implication we foresee coming from this investigation."

Chest pain can indicate serious medical conditions that require a doctor's evaluation. In adults, pain in the chest is often linked to a cardiac problem. In children, however, less than 2 percent of patients receive a cardiac diagnosis for their pain.

The Sibley Heart Center at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta is one of the largest pediatric heart centers in the world, seeing an average of 2,500 new patients with acute chest pain each year.

"We know up front that 99 percent of these patients will not have a heart complication at all. The trick is, it is not zero, and I cannot miss the one patient with heart disease because the consequences could be catastrophic," said Dr. Robert Campbell, chief of the Sibley Heart Center and division director of the department of pediatrics at the Emory University School of Medicine.

The study also observed that noncardiac chest pain patients have a higher level of functional disability-or the inability to participate in everyday activities like running across a football field or making it through a day without a nap. They also spent less time at school and were less involved in extra-curricular activities.

"These kids also report greater levels of physical symptoms with unclear causes, like joint pain, stomach aches, head aches," Lee said. "These symptoms are believed to be psychological manifestations of stress. Sometimes your brain doesn't tell you that you are stressed out, but your body does, so you will experience symptoms like these."

Pediatric patients with noncardiac chest pain also reported higher levels of anxiety sensitivity, a fear of experiencing physical symptoms and additionally fearing that those symptoms are related to a catastrophic health issue.

"Psychological functioning is heavily related to pain," Blount said. "Pain is a sensory experience, but your attention to one thing or another and your emotions can impact your experience of pain. And how debilitating the pain is for you can be determined by psychological and social factors. That is what we were interested in looking at."

Previous studies have shown reducing emotional symptoms can lead to better coping ability with pain, Lee said. "A goal with these patients would be to create a clearer, more comprehensive picture of what is going on and determine a better way to help these kids and adolescents."

Campbell said the UGA research helps him serve the majority of his patients who leave his office with a clean bill of health but unexplained chest pain.

"Most importantly what we've learned is that after a physical evaluation of the patient, we take the time to sit down with the family and find out what they are most worried about so we can address their psychological issues," Campbell said. "We've learned to pay attention and to be confident and reassuring. I need to make it clear to my patients and their parents that I'm not saying you are not having pain, but that the pain is not caused by your heart."
