JERUSALEM ? The Israeli parliament's ethics committee has suspended a lawmaker for reciting an innuendo-laden poem mocking a colleague who herself was suspended for inappropriate behavior.
In his poem Tuesday, Ahmad Tibi made fun of Anastassia Michaeli, who gained notoriety last week when she splashed a glass of water on an Arab lawmaker for telling her to shut up. Michaeli was suspended for a month.
Speaking at a session of parliament, Tibi, who is also an Israeli-Arab, said that Michaeli "grew up on the garbage heaps" of the ultranationalist Yisrael Beitenu party.
Other parts of his poem contained double meanings and a play on words from an Arabic curse.
Some lawmakers chuckled as he spoke.
The committee condemned what it called sexual and chauvinistic language and suspended him for a week.
