Anita Perry: Harder than I imagined (Politico)

Rick Perry?s wife, Anita Perry, who is no newcomer to the campaign trail, admitted Tuesday morning that the presidential race has been more difficult than she could have ever imagined.

?I thought I was a seasoned campaign wife, but I?ve certainly learned lessons along the way and it is much more difficult than I ever imagined it would be,? Perry said on ?The Early Show? from Des Moines on the day of the Iowa caucuses.

Asked what part has been toughest, Perry responded, ?The national scrutiny, the media, the tearing away layer by layer and really examining everything.?

She added, ?But I think that?s good ? the American people need to know who?s out there running and take a hard look at the man that wants to lead the greatest country in the world.?

Perry readily admitted that her husband?s tumble in the polls after an initial surge may well have been a result of his weak debate performances, but insisted that he?s made great progress.

?He?s so much improved. He?s so much better. And I?m not near as nervous as I used to be [watching him]. In fact, I?ve really enjoyed them because I?m seeing him excel now and we?re going to do two debates this weekend in New Hampshire and I think he?s excited about it, too,? she said.

In an earlier appearance on ?Fox & Friends,? Perry said she would not discuss a POLITICO report featuring a quote from a senior adviser that there has ?never been a more ineptly orchestrated, just unbelievably subpar campaign for president of the United States than this one.?

?I don?t know who that person is, so I think that?s inside Beltway politics. Until they tell us who that is, I?m not going to talk about it. Finger-pointing is not a good thing,? she said.

Host Brian Kilmeade also asked Perry to address whether it was true she had ?pushed? Joe Allbaugh to take over the campaign and had the idea to ?exile? adviser Dave Carney.

?Oh my goodness, exile Carney? Oh my gosh, no. Joe Allbaugh?s name was always in the mix. It was always a natural transition for us to grow. And Rick and I make the decisions together. We?ve got a great team of people. Dave Carney, Deirdre Delisi, Rob Johnson, all of those, they?ve been with us for 13 years and I suspect they?re going to be with us for 13 more years,? she said.
