The ?dysfunctional? motor insurance market has been referred to the Competition Commission today for a full investigation into whether drivers are being fleeced.
The Office of Fair Trading has already raised concerns about features that might ?prevent, restrict or distort competition?.
Referral fees and rebate deals involving insurers, brokers, repair shops and credit hire companies could be forcing premiums up by ?225 million a year, or ?10 per policy, the OFT said.
After a six-month study of the market undertaken late last year, the OFT decided to make a provisional referral in May and made that move official today.
